Lawmakers and Leaders Urge SEIU to Abandon Takeover of Calif. Healthcare Union

Distributed by Press Release

OAKLAND, Calif. (Map) - Hundreds call on national union officials to resolve dispute without a trusteeship of United Healthcare Workers-West

OAKLAND, Calif., Nov. 17 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- More than 240 elected officials and community leaders have sent a letter to the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), calling on national union officials to resolve their dispute with the members of United Healthcare Workers-West (UHW), an SEIU affiliate, peacefully and without a takeover of the 150,000-member local union. SEIU has begun proceedings to take over the California-based union through "trusteeship."

The list of signers includes state senators and assembly members, Democratic party leaders, members of boards of supervisors of ten counties, leaders of unions and labor councils across the state, religious leaders, healthcare advocates, leaders of seniors' organizations, and heads of Latino, Filipino-American, and Chinese-American organizations.

The letter says that "UHW has consistently acted with the highest integrity, placing the best interests of caregivers, consumers and communities at the center of its work, and placing top priority on efforts to organize workers who do not yet have the benefit of a union."

While recognizing the need for intervention in recent cases of financial impropriety at other SEIU local unions, the letter's signers write to SEIU, "the dispute between your leadership team and the members of SEIU United Healthcare Workers-West is a separate matter that can and should be resolved through negotiation and compromise, without the imposition of trusteeship."

Several months ago, a mediator proposed by SEIU and accepted by UHW offered recommendations for a peaceful path toward resolution of the dispute. UHW representatives accepted the recommendations, but national SEIU officials rejected them. SEIU officials have continued to seek a takeover of UHW through trusteeship, which would replace the local union's democratically elected leaders with a trustee appointed by national SEIU President Andy Stern. An initial hearing to put UHW into trusteeship was held in September, and a final hearing on the matter concluded Saturday in San Jose.

The letter urges SEIU officials to accept their own mediator's recommendations, and "seek a peaceful resolution of your dispute with UHW rather than precipitate a crippling civil war inside SEIU, California's largest union."
