CHAPPAQUA, N.Y., May 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Egmont USA announced that Walter
Dean Myers, winner of two Newbery Honors and five Coretta Scott King Awards,
will have two books on their Fall 2009 launch list. First is an historical
novel. The second will be a picture book illustrated by Christopher Myers.
This is the fourth picture book collaboration between this father-son team
whose books include the Caldecott Honor Book, Harlem, blues journey and Jazz.
This also marks
Walter Dean Myers's twentieth anniversary working with
Regina Griffin, recently named Egmont's Executive Editor. Griffin edited many
of Myers's books, including Somewhere in the Darkness (Scholastic), which
received a Newbery Honor; and Jazz (Holiday House), which received a Coretta
Scott King Honor.
According to Griffin, "Elizabeth Law, vice president and publisher, and I
felt the Myers' were a perfect fit for Egmont because their work is loved by
reviewers and readers, They share our world views about ethical publishing and
the importance of books as a medium to connect to today's youth. Our goal is
to publish high-quality books with strong kid appeal that engage many readers
from those who love to read to those who may not think of themselves as
readers, but respond to authors whose books resonate with their experience.
Their books speak directly to kids, and they're popular role models."
Walter and Christopher said, "Egmont has a global presence and
consciousness. They see the need to create innovative, exciting children's
media that help kids understand their place in the world. We're impressed with
the range and scope of Egmont's endeavors and with the philosophy behind what
they're doing."
Christopher added, "Regina is someone I'm likely to run into at a
Brazilian concert in Brooklyn, or at the opening of a Chinese opera at the
Met. She's a global thinker who can help pave the way for American children to
understand how they fit in a swiftly changing world. I've worked with
Elizabeth on books benefiting a children's hospital, and she represents for me
the way Egmont thinks in a socially responsible way. I'm excited to work with
them."
Egmont USA www.egmont-us.com will publish young adult and middle grade
fiction and picture books. Sales and distribution is through Random House.
