LPGA Tour Pro Diana D'Alessio Takes Swing at Menstrual Migraines
CLIFTON, N.J. (Map) - Nearly 21 million American women suffer from migraines, and as many as 60
percent of these women experience a migraine attack around the time of their
menstrual cycle. "While the exact cause of menstrual migraine is not known,
evidence suggests that it is strongly associated with hormonal changes that
naturally occur during a woman's monthly menstrual cycle," says "More than 10 years ago, I started getting headaches around the time of my period, usually about nine or 10 months out of the year," said 33-year-old D'Alessio. "For me, that meant severe head pain and an upset stomach that began a couple of days before my cycle. If I was playing golf, I just tried to push through it." After years of living with debilitating pain, D'Alessio discussed her symptoms with her doctor. He diagnosed her with menstrual migraine and was able to treat her with a medication that effectively manages her symptoms. D'Alessio now wants to help other women become aware of menstrual migraine and educate them that it can be successfully diagnosed and treated. "Menstrual migraine is a distinct and treatable condition that differs
from other migraines and occurs around the time of a woman's period," said
While the exact cause of menstrual migraine is not known, evidence suggests it is strongly associated with hormonal changes that naturally occur during the monthly menstrual cycle. Through the PARtnering Against Menstrual Migraine campaign, D'Alessio is encouraging women who think they might be suffering from menstrual migraine to track their symptoms and talk to their healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan. A menstrual migraine tracker, quiz and more information on the condition can be found at the campaign website, www.partneringagainstmenstrualmigraine.com. D'Alessio is also helping raise funds for menstrual migraine education through her performance on the LPGA Tour in 2008. For every hole under par D'Alessio plays in competition, Endo Pharmaceuticals will make a donation to the National Headache Foundation to support consumer menstrual migraine education programs. In addition, a matching donation will be made to D'Alessio's charity of choice, the Susan L. Bader Foundation of Hope. The PARtnering Against Menstrual Migraine campaign is funded by Endo Pharmaceuticals.
