Bottom rigs baited with squid or shrimp brought in the fish this morning at the Avalon Pier in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina. Anglers young and old landed fish consistently, including sea mullet, flounder, spot, croaker, a small shark and a few skates.

Schools of bluefish and Spanish mackerel were nowhere to be found, due, according to a member of the pier staff, to a swift change in water temperature brought on by a west wind. At least one fisherman, however, did catch a bluefish on a Got-Cha plug.

The pier staff member said that this is normally a great time of year to catch blues and Spanish off the pier. Speckled sea trout are another popular fish among pier anglers. The pier includes a jigging only/no bottom fishing area as well as an area set aside for "king rigs," which target king mackerel.

If you plan to fish the Avalon Pier during your Outer Banks summer vacation, get there early and get a good spot. Fishing was basically shoulder-to-shoulder by around 8 a.m. today.

The helpful and knowledgeable gentleman working at the pier said that fall is when the most species of fish are caught in the Outer Banks.

"If I had one month, it'd be October," he said. "And it's a hell of a lot cheaper down here and less people, too."
