The Indiana Department of Natural Resources fishing report shows water temperature in the Michigan City harbor is 47°F, with area creeks continuing to exhibit low flow with clear water.
Lake trout will be hot outside Port of Indiana; steelhead stacking up in Trail Creek
Very heavy angler turnout is expected in area tributaries through the end of October.
Lake trout will be abundant as water temperatures slide into the lower 50s, especially along submerged breakwater outside the Port of Indiana.
Steelheads are being caught with shrimp, spoons and crankbaits where the fish are stacking up in lower and middle reaches of Trail Creek. Salt Creek anglers report scattered steelies everywhere. Action is picking up in the lower reaches of the East Branch of the Little Calumet River, with steelies caught on shrimp, skein and spawn sacs; orange or silver spinners, depending on water clarity, have also been effective at times. The DNR recommends concentrating efforts in deep runs and pools, and casting baits and lures next to large woody debris near deeper water.
No action has been reported to creel clerks on yellow perch.
