Water temperature of the St. Joe River in northern Indiana is 44°F, which is prompting the beginning of the steelhead trout run, according to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
The DNR reports more than 2,600 steelhead were counted moving past the fish ladder at South Bend, Ind. last fall, and the spring migration is beginning. The migration appears to have been delayed by a cold winter.

More fish are expected to enter the river as the water warms. Last fall’s fish remain in the river and will remain until after their spring spawn.
Bait success will be on wobble glows tipped with spawn in the main river channels. Water level is good for both boat and shore fishing.
If you’d like more trout and salmon fishing information, you can call the DNR’s hotline at 574-257-TIPS (8477).
Why not consider a spring break fishing trip in northern Indiana? Grab a friend and head to the beautiful waters of the St. Joe River. Many very good guides are available for hire to take you on productive boat-based fishing trips, but shore fishing spots are accessible in Mishawaka and South Bend at public access sites.
