Nearly 90 people were rescued from a chairlift at Snowbird after extremely high winds shut it down. Ski patrol used a rope and pully system to get the stranded skiers down.
According to KUTV 2 News, rescuers pulled a seat harness up to skiers who then strapped themselves in and where lowered to the ground.
Snowbird was forced to evacuate skiers from the Peruvian Express chairlift because of very high winds that caused the lift cable to malfunction. 89 people were stuck on the chair and were rescued by mountian crews. Although it may have been an uncomfortable situation for the skiers, no injuries were reported. The rescued skiers were given a free lunch and lift ticket to use on another day.
Extremely high winds hit hard along the Wasatch Front in anticipation of a storm front that arrived in the evening. The Utah Avalanche Center reported wind gusts of up to 70-miles-per hour, carrying dust from the west desert that is blanketing the snowpack.
4-7 inches are expected to fall overnight, but those high winds are not creating fun conditions at the ski resorts. The winds should die down when the cold front settles into the valley.
