The Ottawa Senators ticked one more thing off their offseason to-do list by re-signing restricted free agent forward Peter Regin to a two year contract on Thursday. The Sens avoided salary arbitration with Regin by signing him to the two year deal, which will pay him a very cap-friendly $2 million ($950 thousand in year one, and $1.05 million in year two). This is reported to be much less money than Regin and his agents were seeking from the Senators, and the Sens likely dodged a bullet by avoiding arbitration, considering that Boston's Blake Wheeler (who scored only 10 more points than Regin last year) was just awarded a one year deal worth $2.2 million in arbitration.

Regin, a 24 year old winger from Denmark played his first full NHL season with Ottawa in 2009-10, registering 13 goals and 29 points. Regin improved steadily over the course of his first NHL season, and was one of the Sens' better forwards down the stretch, and in their first round playoff loss to Pittsburgh (in which he scored four points in the six game series). Expect Regin to take an increased role in the Senators lineup, likely skating on the second or third line this season.

With Nick Foligno re-signed earlier in the summer, and no Regin on board; the Sens have done well to lock up their young players, but manage the salary cap in the process. Foligno and Regin will both be Senators for at least the next two seasons, and represent two quality forwards in their lineup who will only represent a combined cap hit of $2.2 million for the next two years. Next on GM Bryan Murray's agenda is to re-sign defensemen Chris Campoli, and Brian Lee (both still restricted free agents).
