The purpose of a closet is to store things – primarily we store our hanging clothes in our bedroom closet. Living in Baltimore where storage space in our homes is a premium, finding ways to maximize our closet space is not only a personal victory but a way to save money, time and effort! Couldn’t we all use that? In order to maximize space and protect our clothing we must choose the right hanger – yes, it’s that simple!
The latest rage in hangers is the “huggable hangers” that have a velvety outer layer over an ultra thin hanger that keeps shirts/tops from sliding off and falling on the floor. “Huggable hangers” are also referred to as Slim-Line Hangers or other similar names depending on the retailer. The ultra slim design maximizes the horizontal space in your closet. These hangers are available with or without the slack-bar making these hangers ideal for shirts or pants/slacks. Because these hangers are slim, they cannot support weight of bulky items like heavy dresses or winter coats. You can buy these online by searching ‘huggable hangers’ or at Bed, Bath & Beyond. Bed, Bath & Beyond carries a line of slim hangers called Ultra Slim Black Flocked Hangers for $9.99 (for 10).
Other tips to keeping your closet organized and your clothes protected:
- Do not use hangers that will leave hanger marks on the shoulders. When you wear your shirt, top or sweater it shouldn’t look like the hanger is still in the garment.
- Do not hang sweaters – the sweater will stretch out.
- Hang like items together to maximize space – pants with pants, shirts with shirts, etc.
- Do not store your clothes in the dry cleaning bags – the chemicals are harmful to your clothes and flimsy metal hangers will wear out your clothes more quickly.
