Reserve Sunday, August 15, 2010 for a Farm to Fork tour that will highlight two of the East Bay's finest purveyors of local, organic food: Gather Restaurant in Berkeley and Frog Hollow Farm in Brentwood. Farm to Fork tours are designed to introduce the public to local farmers and ranchers so folks can actually see where the food on their fork comes from and learn how eating local helps sustain the earth and the local economy. Meeting the people who grow the food you eat definately brings a greater appreciation of their efforts and challenges!
Gather Restaurant has made a name for itself as a place where you can find meals crafted from seasonal, locally sourced, organic ingredients that can be enjoyed by both vegetarians and omnivores. The restaurant itself is made of natural and recycled materials and management and staff strive for sustainability in all aspects of the operation.
Frog Hollow Farm, long known to East Contra Costa County residents for its "legendary fruits", has been a organic grower for over 20 years and is an active participant at Bay Area Farmers' Markets and CSA neighborhood deliveries. Besides their glorious fruits, the farm also produces seasonal vegetables year round and has their own pastry chef who turns out delicious baked goods made with Frog Hollow fruit and 100% organic ingredients.
The Farm to Fork tour will start at 10:00 am with brunch at Gather made from ingredients sourced from Frog Hollow Farm. Participants will then travel by bio-diesel bus to Brentwood to visit Knoll Farm, a biodynamic farm blessed with a 12-month growing season which allows owners Rick and Kristie Knoll to sell their fruit, flowers, salad greens, and firewood year round as the seasons allow.
Next stop is Frog Hollow Farm to visit with Farmer Al, tour the farm, pick fruit, and have a snack. There will also be baked goods and fruit available for purchase in lieu of lunch. The bus departs the farm at 3:15 PM for the return trip to Berkeley and the tour's end at 4:00 pm.
The tour is arranged by Bay Area Green Tours, a tour service dedicated to highlighting "green" businesses and organizations that demonstrate sustainability in action. The price is $85, which includes the $20 brunch at Gather Restaurant and transportation to the farms.
This event promises to be both fun and educational, not to mention a chance to try the food at Gather Restaurant! Interested fans of organic food can register here.
