Why eat organic grassfed beef? It's all about blood type!

Good news---great news, in fact---for blood Type O’s! Of the four blood types (O, A, B, AB), those having Type O blood coursing through their veins will thrive on organic grassfed beef.

Naturopath Dr. Peter J. D’Adamo published his bestseller, “Eat Right 4 Your Type,” 10 years ago. Since then, five million copies have sold, in 50 languages. Not bad for a book whose critics lashed out at the concept that blood type, of all things, should dictate what a person should or shouldn’t eat, what exercises they should choose for maximum benefit, and what personality traits are likely to be found in each type. Dr. D’Adamo (and his father before him) believes blood type holds the key to all of those individual discoveries, but his conclusions didn’t materialize out of thin air. Research into genetics, anthropology and medical history were the sound footings upon which he’d built his theories. Thousands of people live healthier lives because of them.

His legion of believers includes me. Before I knew the book existed, I’d tried eating vegetarian style foods, an eating style that didn’t work for me, a member of the blood type group with the largest membership. (Blood Type O’s make up about 50% of the population.) After I read the book, I knew that a diet consisting of organic grassfed beef, well-oiled fish (for example, halibut and cod), and a large variety of fruits and veggies, few grains, almost no dairy, and very little wheat (preferably none) was my best shot at peacefully co-existing with my blood type. Since eliminating old food loves (donuts, for one) to embrace new ones (more veggies), I'm living proof that “Eating Right 4 Your Type” works.

Dr. D’Adamo makes navigating each blood type section in the book easy, with graphs, sample diet plans, recipes for every blood type, and with plenty of text to explain why we eat or avoid certain foods. He lists hundreds of foods, fitting them into one of three categories: Highly Beneficial (think beef, buffalo, lamb, veal, for instance for Type O’s); Neutral (chicken, duck, turkey are three that Type O’s can safely eat), and Avoid (no-no's for O's---pork and goose).

To enjoy plenty of the animal protein Type O’s need, we can lunch or sup, for example, on lean organic grassfed beef as frequently as four to six times a week, keeping serving sizes to two to five ounces for women and children, and four to six ounces for men. The good doctor emphasizes that succeeding in the Type O eating plan depends on eating lean but chemical-free meat, fish, and fowl.

When I told my own naturopath that I’d successfully tried the Type O diet, he endorsed my doing so; in fact, as a Type O himself, he’d been happy with his efforts to follow much of the plan.

Dr. D’Adamo provides a potpourri of information on his website for anyone who’d like to explore this healthful lifestyle. For those who don’t have an inkling of what they’re blood type is, he offers a low-cost kit to type their blood.
