Sandra Bullock joins the ranks of adoptive mamas

People magazine reports that a infant boy was placed with Sandra Bullock and her (soon-to-be-divorced) husband, Jesse James, in January, and that the actress has kept the placement private until now.

The first quarter of 2010 has been an eventful one for the Bullock-James couple. In January, Bullock earned a Golden Globe for her role as a Leading Actress for The Blind Side. In March, she won the Oscar for the same role. Shortly thereafter, news broke that her husband had had an affair. Bullock has recently filed for divorce.

Bullock and James began the adoption process four years ago, and Bullock insisted that they be treated as any other adopting couple, according to People editor Larry Hackett, who spoke on The Today Show about the exclusive story on Wednesday.

Bullock named the child Louis Bardo Bullock. "Louis" was chosen as a name because the song It's a Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong came into her mind the moment she first saw him. The boy was born in New Orleans.

A small circle of family and friends has been instrumental in keeping the news contained until Bullock was ready to make her motherhood public. She's been taking Louis to doctor's appointments and has held a bris for the boy. She is reportedly in the final stages of the adoption process.

There is no word on whether or not the adoption will be open.

This issue of People magazine goes on sale Friday.

some bloggers are raising some critical issues about the effectiveness of the home study process, if the adoption was allowed to proceed in the midst of a family crisis. good points, I think.

presumably the home study had been completed awhile if they started the process years ago, but the placement occurred just when the family was in a very high profile crisis. don't think that would have happened with your average non-celebrity family.

I imagine this situation will bring a host of issues to the forefront.

Regarding the timing, from what I can piece together (which is nothing more than tracking the news) the baby was born and placed in January when the family was in the news for the Golden Globe win and Sandra Bullock's speech in which she thanked her husband for "having her back."

Then she won the Oscar and THEN the story broke of Jesse James' infidelity.

The homestudy had presumably been long completed, but this upset would throw any post-placement agency follow-up into chaos.

I betting we'll have many more questions than answers as the story unfolds.
