Open adoption resolutions for 2010

Out with the old, in with the new.

Many of us plan to be on an upward trajectory with our lives. A new year is a time to set goals, to plan ahead, to pursue your priorities. Why not also consider improving your open adoption? Here are four ideas on how.

  • Re-evaluate.  What is working in your situation? Can you create more of it? What is not working? How can you change it while considering the effects on all involved?
  • Reach out. Is it time to reach out to someone in your open adoption? What might be some good ways to do so?
  • Find community.  Maybe you have something to learn, maybe you have something to teach, but in either case there are others who are navigating open adoptions. Find them using some of the resources listed here and here to help you become more connected in 2010.
  • Broaden your horizons: Which part of the triad has the most unfamiliar viewpoint to you? Choose a position other than your own to focus on in 2010. How can you find out more about what it feels like to be in an open adoption as an adoptee, as a first parent, as an adoptive parent? Read adoption books and adoption blogs. Join adoption groups (see point above).

What resolutions do you have regarding open adoption in 2010?

This is the year that I make myself more available to my community. To teach and to guide my sisters and brothers to a place of healing, forgiveness, acceptance and new possibilities. As a birthmother and an adoptive mother in an open adoption I am making a commitment to reach out, to support others and to participate more in the adoption community. Much love KC

I like this list. It can be used in most situations. To me, the most important would be a fair, unbiased re-evaluation.

A great, commonsense approach. I am twittering this to my list.

I love this idea....will be pondering it and figuring out where I need to grow, and how I can help my children do the same!
