Twitter is examining another way to increase revenue for through the sale of advertisements. Having already announced an ad platform known as Promoted Tweets, the site appears to now be considering selling a spot in its trending topics, “Promoted Trends.”

According to a story from All Things Digital, Twitter is feeling out advertiser’s interest in Promoted Trends, noting the “messaging service has been talking about it in vague terms and has yet to test it. Further, “Advertisers who have heard Twitter talk about the product say the service imagines charging “tens of thousands of dollars” a day for exclusive placement rights.”

If the service becomes a reality, it would allow a purchaser of the ad space in the trending topics could create a trending topic term featured with other trending topics for the amount of time agreed to. Were a Twitter user to click on the the trending ad, the user would be directed to a search results page featuring the advertiser’s promoted tweet at the top of the page.

For local businesses that can afford a Promoted Trend the revenue generated could be substantial. For instance, Dallas-based Neiman Marcus could purchase a Promoted Trend using the brand name of an item it sells at its stores or online as its trending term. By clicking on the term, with the user re-directed to the search page with a Promoted Tweet, the company realize an immediate response to its call to action and a substantial ROI.
