Signing up with Neopets is a simple five-step process. Neopets doesn't require much personal information to sign up, and can be completed in a matter of minutes. Here's a step by step guide so you can get started on the fun!
To get started, first log onto Neopets.com and click any of the banners or links that invite you to sign up now.
Step 1: Create a Username and Password
You will first see an image like the one above with four pieces to complete. First, you must choose a username. This is how people will know you on the site - for instance, the new account I'm starting is ogexaminer. This can be anything within the guidelines, but you will want to click the button "Check availability" to see if the name has already been taken. Neopets has been around for ten years, so you may not get what you want exactly.
The second piece asks you to create a password. It must have at least 6 characters (letters or numbers count as characters), but two of these must be numbers. You can also use symbols. Once you've picked a password that works for you, re-enter the password in the third box; this is to make sure you know your password and typed it correctly twice.
Finally, there's a fourth box, that has you click to check that you agree with the Terms and Conditions and Privacy Policy. If you're concerned about all the legal bits, make sure you read these first before clicking that you agree. When you're ready, click the green Next button on the bottom right.
Step 2: Who Are You?
The next step (shown above) is going to request some personal information from you, but nothing terribly identifying. The first box will ask for your first name - and since this is shown publicly, you may want to use a nickname if you're not comfortable with your real first name.
You'll next select if you're male or female, and then enter in your accurate date of birth. Don't bluff on this one; you'll need it as a security question if you lose access to your account.
Finally, select your country, city and state, and enter in your zip code; this is just demographics. Once again, when complete, hit the green next button.
Step 3: Enter Your E-Mail Address
You're only asked two things during step 3: to enter, and then re-enter, your email address. Yes, some promotional emails for Neopets will be sent to your e-mail account, but no other players will be able to access your e-mail address. You do need a valid e-mail address for two reasons: activating your account, and recovering your password. Once complete, hit the Next button.
Step 4: Create a Neopet
While the bots at Neopets send you your activation code, you're led to the hardest step: creating your first Neopet! There are over 30 choices to choose from to start, and each species has a different look for male and females, and four different basic colors to choose from (red, yellow, green, and blue). Each species also has a different sort of personality and behavior. On the right side, under the "Your Neopet" preview, you'll see the name of the species, followed by a question mark. Click the question mark to find out more about the species in a small pop-up.
Next, you need to name your Neopet. There are so many millions of Neopets out there, this will take you a long time! Just make sure that you don't choose anything that would be offensive to anyone. Once you've figured a name out, choose the pet's gender, and answer a few questions about their personality. This doesn't affect much, but does give your pet some character!
Last, you need to choose your Neopet's stats. You'll be given three options - one heavy on movement, one heavier on strength, and one heavier on defense and movement. These stats are useful when it comes to the Battledome, a place where you can battle your pets, but you'll also need to train your pet a lot - so choose whichever fits your style. Once again, when done, click Next.
Step 5: E-mail activation
By now, you should have received an e-mail from Neopets that looks like this at the top:
After your username and password, the e-mail will give you an activation code. Below, the body of the e-mail will say:
To get started, activate your account by clicking on the link below and logging in. [http://www.neopets.com/activate.phtml?code=?????].
Click the link in bold, and you will open a new window that will activate your account and let you get started in Neopets, including taking the tutorial. And that's it - you're set up to play!
