USA qualifies for Olympic Games in women's soccer

The United States have qualified for the 2012 Olympic Games in London in women's soccer.

On Friday night, the United States defeated Costa Rica 3-0 in the semi-final of the Olympic Women's Qualifying Tournament at B.C. Place Stadium in Vancouver, British Columbia. With the win, the United States will be part of the 12 team tournament from July 27 to August 12.

The Americans received goals from Tobin Heath of Sky Blue FC, Carli Lloyd of the Atlanta Beat and Alex Morgan of the Western New York Flash.

In the first half, Costa Rica actually controlled the play, and had more scoring opportunities than the United States. There was one time a shot actually went off the crossbar.

The United States joins host Great Britain, Japan, North Korea, South Africa, Cameroon, Brazil, Colombia, Sweden and France who have qualified for the 2012 Games to date. Canada plays Mexico for one more spot later this evening and there is still one more spot available from the Oceania region. That tournament will occur in March with New Zealand being the favourite.
