Rams say no to T.O. and promise Sam Bradford signing is near

The St. Louis Rams flirtation with wide receiver Terrell Owens has ended. According to FoxSports' Jay Glazer, league officials say the Rams will not offer a contract to the veteran receiver. Meanwhile, former Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Sam Bradford has a “really good chance” to sign his rookie contract by Thursday.

The weekend was roaring with news that St. Louis was going to offer Terrell Owens a contract to join a team that finished the 2009 season with a 1-15 record. When the front office of the Rams met on Monday, they chose to pass on the volatile receiver.

“We’re comfortable with our wideouts,” general manager Billy Devaney told FoxSports. “I know it sounds crazy because they’re not household names. We may not have that real famous No. 1 go-to guy right now. But as a group, they have a chance to be pretty good. We’ve got a lot of guys who can be real solid NFL players. It’s not like we’re gnashing our teeth saying, ‘If we don’t have T.O., we’re screwed.’ Not even close.”

The Rams starting receiving corps include Donnie Avery, Laurent Robinson, Keenan Burton and Danny Amendola. None of the receivers are household names. Robinson is the veteran player on the team with four years NFL experience.

"We're not one or two players away from going to the Super Bowl,” Delaney said. “Let's be honest, we're not going to the Super Bowl this year.”

The first piece of their rebuilding process is signing Bradford and Delaney said it looks like the former Sooners Heisman Trophy winner will sign before the Rams enter training camp on Thursday. Bradford enters preseason competing with A.J. Feeley and Keith Null for the starting job.

“Nobody wins a job in OTAs and minicamps,” Devaney said. “It will be an open competition. I know it sounds crazy, but Keith Null will be in the mix. He made great strides from year one.”

Of Bradford, Devaney said “He looks like he’s unflappable. He’s a smart guy. Being a great player means something to him. He’s got a tremendous respect for the NFL and his peers. He doesn’t put himself like the first pick in the draft.”

Terrell Owens, on the other hand, is still looking for someone who wants to take a chance on him. Cincinnati Bengals team president Mike Brown said they are interested in signing the receiver. Owens has been practicing recently with Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer, who has shown a good ability to coexist with Chad Ochocinco.

“He's a good player. He changes field position," Brown said "Makes a lot of long plays. Plays to win games. I think I'd rather have him line up on our side of the ball than the other side of the ball.”

The idea of Owens joining Ochocinco and former Sooners star tight end Jermaine Gresham in Cincinnati is an intriguing possibility. The Bengals won the AFC North in 2009 without a true compliment to Ochocinco. Despite the questions signing Owens might raise, the move might be what the team needs to reach the next level.
