Oklahoma recruit wins MVP award at All-Star tournament

T.J. Taylor of Denison, Texas won the MVP award at the annual Texas High School Coaches Association All-Star Basketball Game in San Antonio. Taylor had signed his letter of intent with The University of Oklahoma on Nov. 11, 2009.

Taylor scored 18 points to lead the North to a 113-95 victory over the South. Darius Richardson, a Texas-Arlington signee, was named the South MVP following his 23-point performance.

"T.J. is a strong left-handed guard who can play both guard positions," head coach Jeff Capel said. "He's very physical and he can shoot it. One of my favorite things about him is that he loves to play, he loves to compete.”

Taylor is a 6-3, 205-pound guard who ESPN ranked the No. 71 overall player in the 2010 recruiting class. He averaged 27.1 points, 6.1 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 3.0 steals per game for Denison. He also won his district’s offensive player of the year as a sophomore and junior.

"I think the University of Oklahoma is getting possibly the best guard in Texas,” former Denison head coach Scott Curran said. “I think he's going to get even better at the next level."

Denison used this game as a chance to show the nation what he was capable of accomplishing.

“I'm a country boy and not a city kid,” Taylor said after the game, “so I think everybody slept on me a little. Our team (Denison) never got out of the second round of the playoffs, so it wasn't like anybody got to see me at the state tournament. This was the chance for people to see what I can do.”
