When the Bengals signed wide receiver Terrell Owens, the Cincinnati Bengals officially became the T.O.Chocinco Show. Between these two wide outs, there might not be enough balls to go around. It is almost a foregone conclusion the two friends will be competing to see who can get into the end zone more. It will be a fun time to be a Bengals fan to see how many fines the two will pay as they compete to see who can do the most over-the-top touchdown celebration.
The man who will benefit most from the T.O.Chocinco show is running back Cedric Benson. The former Texas Longhorn revitalized his career when he escaped from the wastelands of Chicago for the welcome arms of the Cincinnati Bengals.
Benson only went from being a flop, languishing on a Bears team that didn’t know how to play offense, to a 1,000-yard rusher in his second year in stripes. With two receiver the caliber of Owens and Ochocinco pulling double coverage on both sides of the field, the running lanes just became that much clearer for Benson.
Where does that leave highly touted first round draft pick Jermaine Gresham?
When he finally signs, people in the know believe he will be the starting pass catching tight end. Reggie Kelly, who will step into a mentoring role for the rookie, will be the man brought in to block. With Owens and Ochocinco, as well as fellow new signee Antonio Bryant, there won’t be many two-tight end sets on the field. With those two playmakers, it is more likely the Bengals will use Kelly more often to help protect Carson Palmer while the two playmakers stretch the field.
That is why Jermaine Gresham needs to get to training camp.
The longer he waits to sign his contract, the more practices he misses. The more he misses, the less time he has to learn the playbook. The longer it takes Gresham to get into camp, the better Reggie Kelly looks.
The longer Jermaine Gresham waits, the less chance he has of making any kind of impact while the T.O.Chocinco Show is on the field.
