How do you replace twenty-eight graduating seniors and other college athletes ready for the pros? You do it by bringing in the best class in college recruiting.
With national signing day still almost two weeks away the commitments from top athletes to come to Columbus is off the charts. As of this writing, Ohio State was ranked first by Scout.com, scoring 4682. That’s nearly twenty percent higher than current runner-up North Carolina with 3823.
The roster of the buckeyes-to-be has as many four and five-star ratings as a list of movies staring Tom Hanks (beginning with Forrest Gump, and excluding Joe Versus the Volcano). We are talking about eleven players in the top ten ranking nationally at their respective position and seventeen four-star or higher rated athletes.
Topping that list is Carlos Hyde, the top rated high school fullback from Naples, Florida. Hyde is described as a big bruiser of a running back who can power his way through the pile to gain yards. He is not a finesse player, but he’s powerful and in the smash-mouth Big Ten he’ll be right at home with that style of play.
Coming from the greater Pittsburgh area of Monroeville, PA is linebacker Dorian Bell. Bell is a linebacker’s linebacker who can play any of the three positions. He has great speed and awareness that could make him the tackling machine that A.J. Hawk was for the Buckeyes. Bells’ one downfall is that he is injury prone.
Also on defense is Melvin Fellows from Garfield Heights, Ohio. He’s a five star rated player who needs some time to develop as a defensive back. He’s big and fast and has all the tools needed to be a solid player. Ohio State is the right place for that, and Jim Tressel has done it before.
On the D-line Johny Simon commands respect. This Cardinal Mooney Defensive Tackle has a strong explosive playing style and dominates the line of scrimmage. He’s the third ranked DT in the country and the third five-star commitment to Ohio State.
And those are just some of the commitments!
On Feburary fourth the Buckeyes hope to add some more star power to this offence. Eight uncommitted players are still considering college football in Columbus. I’ll have more on that this weekend, until then,
O – H!
