Golfers who want to go green on the greens and support wildlife should head for Memphis, Tennessee.
Singer/actor Justin Timberlake has just opened his eco-friendly golf course and the first golf course in the country to be certified bird-friendly by the Audubon Society.
Timberlake who bought the golf course and spent $16 million in renovation, is a native of Memphis and wanted to do something special for his community.
He also apparently thought it would be fun. In interviews reported by the Memphis news source Commercial Appeal Timberlake acknowledged that he got the idea to buy the golf course from his father in 2007. Dad originally floated the idea, to Timberlake’s initial amusement. But dad wasn’t kidding, and the singer decided it was a great idea.
See the video originally aired on Golf in America on the Mirimichi Golf Course, and Timberlake view of the course and why he bought it. It's a story about a family that just wanted to save a golf course and do right by the environment.
With the rehabilitation of the course came the opportunity to work with the The Audubon Classic Sanctuary Program.
As part of the program Mirimichi implemented integrated wildlife conservation, restored and enhanced natural habitats, established water conservation and water quality protection initiatives.
Part of the package also involves integrated pest management, as well as waste and energy management.
The result in a more natural and naturally gorgeous golf course with 100 acres of managed turf converted to native grasslands which.provide a sanctuary for local Tennessee plants and wildlife and a natural filter for cleaning storm water. And require less watering.
The other really impressive aspect of Mirimichi is that this beautiful course is open to the public.
The course stretches more than 7,400 yards from the tips, and offers five different tee boxes to appeal to golfers of all abilities. Enjoy lush fairways, scenic vistas, four waterfalls, six lakes, and two rolling streams.
