The 2012 Baseball season of the Occidental College Tigers officially began on January 29th, with a doubleheader against La Sierra University, of Riverside, California. It took place on Anderson Field, a carved out depression in the earth, situated on the eastern edge of the Occidental campus. Occidental’s baseball season opened on a very positive note.
On the previous day, Occidental’s Baseball team took on a team made up of a collection of Occidental baseball alumni, ranging from one who graduated from Occidental all the way back in 1971, to a few who graduated as recently as June,2011. The result was a victory for this year’s team by a score of 18-5. This created a momentum that carried into the games that were scheduled the following day, against La Sierra University. In game 1 against La Sierra, Occidental scored their first run in their half of the 1st inning. They went on to score 6 runs in the second inning, 2 runs in the third, three in the fourth, and one in the sixth, holding La Sierra scoreless. The 13 runs that Occidental scored to this point included 4 home runs. La Sierra was held scoreless until their half of the 9th inning, where, with two outs, Kenneth Curiel belted a three run home run that avoided a shutout, but still gave Occidental a 13-3 victory in the first game of the doubleheader.
The momentum generated by Occidental in game 1 carried over to game 2, as they took a 1-0 lead in their half of the 1st inning, on a home run by Logan Allen. They proceeded to score four runs in the second, two runs in the third, five runs in the fourth, and five more in the fifth, to make a final score of 17-0, in Occidental’s favor.
Occidental’s record after “Opening Day” stands at 2-0.
