Unilever United States, Inc., in cooperation with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is conducting a nationwide voluntary recall of a portion of Slim-Fast® products as of December 3, 2009. According to their website, those being recalled include all of their Slim-Fast® ready-to-drink (RTD) products in cans, "due to the possibility of contamination with Bacillus cereus, a micro-organism, which may cause diarrhea and possibly nausea and/or vomiting." Their website states that the chance of serious adverse health consequences is remote and that the products were sold in stores nationwide. You are urged to discard any of their ready-to-drink products, regardless of flavor, Best-By date, lot code or UPC number. Visit their website for more specifics about this recall and for information on how to obtain a refund.
If you are currently using these canned drinks in a healthy weight loss program, consider using some of their other products for the time being that are not affected by this recall. Products not affected include their powdered shakes, meal bars and snack bars.
Weight loss is a long term goal best accomplished by moderation, healthy eating and exercise. Always speak with your doctor before beginning a new diet or exercise program.
