A tea party protestor
The Tea Party Express has hit Washington and while there are many sincere people involved in the Tea Party protests and they have valid points to make about government spending, the entire movement is stained by the fact that its organized by conservatives who are the ones responsible for the mess in the first place and who haven't to this day, taken responsibility for their own mistakes and the economic mess they created by letting George W Bush get away with his disastrous policies.
The problem for the sincere Tea Party protesters is the entire movement is conservative organized which. unfortunately completely undermines iits credibility.
It was the conservatives who, after 8 years of the greatest economic expansion in history during the Clinton years, came to power and intentionally undid everything Clinton did, reversing all of Clinton's policies. And anyone with half a brain knows that if you do the opposite of anything you will get the opposite results. And that's what the Republicans did. And that's what the country got. Now the conservatives are shaking their baby rattles and complaining.
It was a conservative Republican administration and a conservative Republican congress who blew a $5 1/2 trillion budget surplus. They destroyed the balanced budget they inherited, and after Clinton had eliminated the deficit, they exploded the deficit to record levels with their war and tax policies.
It was a conservative Republican government that took the country from the greatest economic expansion in history, lowest unemployment in 40 years, a balanced budget and record surpluses to deficits, unemployment and the greatest economic crisis since the 1930's.
So during these Tea Party protests conservatives are showing why the word "hypocrite" should be part of the dictionary definition of conservative.
They said nothing and did nothing while Bush and the Republican congress were getting the country into deeper and deeper trouble. The conservatives who organize the Tea Party protests sat on their hands and did nothing. They did nothing when the balanced budget was destroyed, nothing when Bush exploded the deficit, nothing when Bush cut taxes instead of raising them to pay for the war he started.
This means that nothing the conservative organizers have to say can or should be taken seriously or be seen as anything other than cheap partisan politics. And that is too bad since there are legitimate issues to be dealt with. And while not everyone who is protesting is a conservative, the protests bear the conservative stamp. And that is the Kiss of Death. Because conservatives forfeited their right to be taken seriously by playing Hear No Evil ,See No Evil ,Speak No Evil during 8 years of the disastrous Bush Administration.
They proved there are no real principles behind the organizing of these protests even if some of the people who join them do so out of principle. But for the organizers its only a lust for power and their motivation is politics.
When Bush became the first President in history to take the country to war and cut taxes at the same time they said nothing. They just happily took their tax cuts, supported the unnecessary war in Iraq and were happy not to pay for it and pass the cost along. Exactly what they are complaining about now. They simply don't want to pay for their mistakes. But they will, like it or not. Which is why the Tea Party protests from conservatives have not so much to do with tea but with whine.
If the legitimate Tea Party protestors want to be taken seriously they are going to have to split from the conservative Republican organizers of the movement who have no credibility. As long as the Tea Party protests are conservative organized and motivated they will never be taken seriously by the only people in congress who matter -- the Democrats who control both houses.
The Tea Party conservatives not only don't want to pay for their mistakes they don't want to admit they even made mistakes while Bush and the Republicans ran the country's economy into the ground. Instead they want to blame the current president and the current congress.
It isn't a coincidence that now that the Democrats are in power these fiscally concerned conservatives have suddenly found their voice.
The honest Tea Party protestors will need to divorce themselves from any affiliation with Republicans or conservatives, the people who created the problem in the first place and did nothing, if they want to be taken seriously.. Otherwise the only thing these protesters can expect in the end is a lot of tea but no sympathy.

it took all the presidents before obama to rack up a trillion and with a democratic congress last 2 yrs of BUSH. It took obama 5 months to double it and double the unemployment rate. Who is the hippocrite who is BLIND

I know for a fact many attended for just that reason, hell that goes back to some of the protests in the 60's.
we took in more revenue with BUSH gigving money back to the people who run the country. obama is giving money to slackers, acorn abortion clinics 900 million to Hamas( do a google). Wonder why gm and chrysler are still failing and ford is up 17%.

A large portion of the protestors are independent, libertarian, or simply not affiliated with either the Republican or Democrat parties. Blaming our current problems solely on conservatives is a bit naive...the real problem lies in the wolf in sheeps clothing...the Federal Reserve!!!! Additionally, the Obama administration has ballooned our debt to unprecedented levels in record time. He may or may not mean well, but Mr. Obama is apparently bereft of any trace of economic knowledge. We are digging a debt hole that WILL cave in on us if it is not remediated with extreme prejudice.

BTW - the economic expansion began BEFORE Clinton. The overspending began during Carter. The war was necessary (and your Obamasiah even agrees). Clinton's policies are the ones which led to the downfall. Had Bush reversed Clinton's policies regarding lending, the housing market would be better off.

It's odd that 46% of the country voted for the Republican candidate in the last election, yet according to most Democratic spokesmen, the 46% either don't represent a legitimate group of ideas because they "lost" or are being led like lemmings to the cliffs by evil conservative leaders. The 46% will quickly become 52% and regain the leadership of the country.

Obama is a jerk. His wife was one of the instigators of the dumping of homeless patients onto skid-rows that Kaiser hospitals and clinics practiced until it became a public outcry. He's the same guy who left his grandmother, who had raised him as a child, to live in poverty. Now he and his wife talk about health care reform as moral rights. Who are these two trying to fool? Apparently it's the democrats and liberals who voted for him.

The litany of outrage this country and Iraq suffered as a result of the Bush Administration while Republicans defended it more than marginalizes the folks partying/protesting in DC today. Marc Rubin, this is the worst story I have ever read. What are you talking about? Clinton's 8 years of economic expansion came to a screaching hault when the tech bubble burst in 2000. It was clinton's inability to eliminate osama in the 90s, which resulted in planes crashing into buildings, which also ended clinton's economic expansion.

From what I recall many of those 46% were democrats who just cuouldn't stand seeing Hillary lose, or have a black man in the white house. So don't get your hopes up just yet.

It is sad that the author doesn't remember that the economy was sinking in the last few months of Clinton's term. In fact, the Dem pundits were screaming that Bush was talking down the economy to get elected. Check the record and remember that Bush entered with a recession already starting and the recession was worsened by 9/11 and we never fully recovered from any of that. Bush and the Congress were able to slow it down and even turn it around temporarily, but the Senate/Congress ignored the Bush Administrations alerts that the housing market was in trouble. When that bubble broke we had nowhere to go but down. Why did the housing bubble break? Ask Barney Frank and look at policies from the Carter era that encouraged mortgages for families who could not afford them because the Dem's felt it was unfair that the percentage of minorities owning houses wasn't the same as whites even though they couldn't afford them. They should have focused on ways to improve their ability to earn money.

and what would that be? Clinton was sucessfuly economically thanks to the republican congress, peace (thanks to Ronald Reagan) and the ability to cut defense spending, and demographic economic trends of technology and the baby boom. What did he do that so so brilliant? He spent like everyone else, cut defense, and was lucky enough to ride an economic wave that he had nothing to do with.
Bush spent like a drunken sailor also, but all true conservatives were sickened by that.

If Out Of Control Spending and Expansion of Government was bad under Bush - why is it OK under Obama as he does it at an unprecendented scale? If Tea Party people are Hypocrites because they are now speaking out - what about the people who spoke up against Bush and are now silent?
Is this for real? The main organizers of the tea party convention aren't republicans, they are libertarians! These aren't people who voted for bush, these are people who voted for grassroots efforts like Ron Paul or they are people who realized how much damage bush caused and have repented of their previous votes. The US Government is providing $900 million in aid to Palestine to rebuild the core of their country after it was destroyed by months of offensives by Israel. And, if you knew anything about budget cycles, you'd know that it takes roughly a year for a president's policies to have any impact on the economy. The spiral in the last five months is residual from Bush-era policy decisions. Business who are forced to cut employees today suffered their economic hits in 2008, before Obama was elected. GDP has dropped the least during the second quarter of 2009 since the first quarter of 2008. You want to post facts? Maybe you should verify them first. Google THAT!

My compliments to Marc Rubin for putting a face on the conservative Tea Party Movement, which is formed mostly by extreme leftists who never so much as read the tea leaves when the Bush Admintration and Republican Congress was dismantling one of the most successful presidential tenures in history. It is sad is that the Republican Party is a headless monster akin to the loose tail of a salamander striking every which way and no head. It is even sadder to know that the inside of the Republican Party is full of power hungry rich individuals who are waiting on the sidelines, enjoying this sorry spectacle, and then decide to show up in 3 years time, like the bench quarterback hoping to throw the game saving long bomb, and win back the administration of our government, ready to make the quick bucks and run, just like Cheney and Rumsfield and Bush and Wolfowitz, and screw the Tea Party idiots one more time...... when will they ever learn?
