Tea party protesters and town hall mobs lose in new CBS poll on public option

WTSP Tampa - healthcare reform opponents at town hall

After a summer of town hall meetings featuring Hitler signs, swastikas, yelling, harassing,  and foaming at the mouth from protesters opposing health care reform, and with cable news giving them the usual "man bites dog" television coverage, the latest CBS News poll shows that after the dust has settled,  65% of the American people still want the public option.

This not only comes on the heels of tea party protesters and organized right wing town hall opposition to health care reform but also after more than $60 million has been spent for TV commercials opposing the public option. On top of that there's been the serial reversals by President Obama. And still a large majority want the public option.

Its not just bad news for opponents of health care and the public option and good news for its supporters. It also leaves Obama with a lot of egg on his face in light of his constant wavering, reversals, dropping and supporting then dropping the public option as soon as he felt too much political heat. After all of that, 65% support a public option.

Back in June both a CBS News poll and a CNN poll showed 72% and 66% respectively supported the public option. And they wanted it to such an extent that 57% were willing to pay higher taxes to get it. And the reason is obvious. It's a good idea and is offering the American people something worth having.

Support for the public option seemed to drop in the face of  unanswered Republican attacks and the extensive coverage of the contentious town hall  meetings and tea party protests with cable news journalists declaring the public option dead or on life support. In some ways, CNN actually repudiated their own polls which had shown strong support for a public option and when subsequent polling showed a dramatic drop never did the obvious -- do a poll asking if people had changed their minds as a check against faulty methodology.

Interestingly enough, the latest CBS poll also showed that 55% believe that if the health care reforms being proposed now including the public option, are adopted, the results will be better than Obama has explained. Which shows that the American people are making up their own minds based on facts and that Obama has actually done a  mediocre job explaining it and selling it. Which I have been pointing out all along.

The idea that Obama is the best possible spokesman, or that he has these powers of persuasion that people respond to as the rationale for sending him out so often, is a myth. He is not a good salesman, and his oratory lacks focus, power and clarity.

His speech to the joint members of congress on health care worked because he finally got into specifics and made a committment to the public option, though he flip flopped  less than a week later. He will probably enthusiastically support it again given the lastest poll numbers.. His own poll numbers on how he is handling health care went from 40% approval before his speech to 47% after.

Opponents of health care reform and the public option are now out in the cold. They really have no arrows left in their quiver. But the Democrats have many.

With public support clearly in favor of the public option and a filibuster proof majority in the senate and a House who will not pass a bill that doesn't have it, the public option looks  impossible to stop. And with such a substantial majority wanting it, Democrats like the Blue Dogs who vote against it will do so at their own political peril.

These are the results of the CBS poll taken September 26

GOV’T HEALTH INSURANCE PLAN
                  Now                      8/2009         7/2009           6/2009
Favor         65%                        60%               66%                  72%
Oppose     26 %                       34%                 27%                  20%

In addition, only  38% said they would support a health care bill that didn't have a public option with 40% opposing and 22% saying they didn't know.

I am in favor for public option. Between my husband and myself we are health insurance poor. He has gap insurance that is supposed to pay all costs of hospital that medicare does not cover. Yet when he had to have a pacemaker in March, we received a statement from the hospital for $52,677.75 this week. Just because you have health insurance does not mean the insurance company is going to pay.

Gee... whodathunkit. A lefty following Goebell's Maxim (If you tell a lie often enough...).
There's a reason why most people with an IQ higher than their shoe size call CBS the 'Commie Broadcast Service'. Only a complete and utter moron would accept *anything* that CBS (or the rest of the MSM for that matter) as fact without first doing a little fact-checking of their own.
Damn. I think I just lost 10 IQ points myself as a result of reading this imbecilic article.

Wow! You can tell that Indiana is a decidedly red state. However, Indiana isn't the whole country and the majority of Hoosiers does not a majority of the country make. The majority of the country wants the public OPTION. Eventually, they will get it. It is entirely up to our representatives whether they will be the ones to do it, or whether their successors will.

You spout more Obama Propaganda from CBS, Obama's Joseph Goebbels...

    And then reality set in...

Only 41% of voters now support #Obama and Democrats #healthcare reform proposal, down from 44% 2 weeks ago bit.ly/2rJ8U #teaparty

Just because CBS says 1 million people did not show up in Washington DC on 912 does not change the facts twurl.cc/1o4q

I am a Quibblist. I am prejudiced against those who quibble, who parse their words to not be lying in the narrowest sense of the word or who outright lie.

So now that you have done your master bidding, toddle on off and grovel at the feet of power for your handout scraps for having done their bidding.

This is too funny. You wait until you are forced to pay for your own health insurance. You wait until you have to choose between food or a health care premium. Let it happen and watch the fall out next election. The bottom line here is the new system may drive small businesses out of business, drive individuals to the poor house or jail them for tax evasion, pull the plug on grandma, give corporate America a free ride, create a windfall for insurance companies and big pharma, and/or give free health care to illegal aliens.

Every intelligent person knows this whole health care issue is nothing more than a massive tax increase for the government to use as bail out money for more bankers and large campaign contributors.

What a joke. I can't wait for election day.
