From the first moments of the Tiger Woods story, right up to the present, it seems that the media had an agenda they were trying to push and didn't want the facts to get in the way.( sound familiar?) And the agenda was to minimize the information coming out about Tiger Woods and let the apologists take over.
And the reason this is important is not so much because of Tiger Woods, but because the Woods story was another example of something that has been glaringly clear for a long time -- the media can't be trusted.
When the Woods story first broke, there were two versions that came out simultaneously -- first that Woods got into an accident outside his home and that his wife used a golf club to smash the window of his SUV to pull the unconscious Woods to safety.
Knowing what we know now, it makes you laugh doesn't it? But even knowing what was known then made that story preposterous. The other version, ( supplied by a neighbor) was that Woods and his wife had a big fight and she was chasing him out of the house with a golf club and used it to smash his window in anger as he was pulling out. That was the version that had the most plausibility but it was the other that the media promoted.
Though to this day no one has said this, there is a very good chance, that Elin's smashing of the window with the golf club caused Woods to crash into the tree. Not that there is a chance anyone will bring charges against her.
The nonsense the media provided continued with commentators on ESPN, CNN and MSNBC all rallying behind Woods, saying Woods sponsors would stick by him. One, Donny Deutsch, an ad exec with his own agency, even offered the opinion that the revelations of Woods cheating on his wife with all these women made him an even more desirable spokesman since it made him more human. That may go down as one of the ten dumbest and most slanted statements of the year.
Woods sponsors have already started dumping him and there is no doubt that all of them will eventually. And for good.
Then we had the respected Mike Lupica telling us in his column that Tiger will go away and repent or whatever it is he will do and then -- presto! Woods will be back "better than ever" according to Lupica.
Woods will not be back better than ever despite all the jock worshipping done by the media.
With the focus that it takes to play golf on the level that Woods plays, assuming he tries to play again in a year ( yes, a year) he may never come back to the level we've seen. How does he play at his best knowing that his name is now a joke. Say the name Tiger Woods and people smirk. And its not going away. His wife is going to sue for divorce, for full custody of the kids and half his $600 million estate. Which guarantees his name is going to be back in the media associated with the scandal of his own making and the divorce is going to make for a very public media feeding frenzy if Woods decides to contest any part of it.
While some in the media think Woods might be gone for as long as May,( that was ESPN) its not likely Woods will play golf again in 2010. And if and when he does come back, he won';t be anywhere close to what he was. This isn't Mohammed Ali coming back after being unjustly stripped of his title and winning political, personal and religious vindication in the Supreme Court. Ali's absence from boxing was heroic and his comeback was heroic. Woods absence is sleazy. During his exile from boxing Ali was very visible. Woods is hiding. And if Woods does make a comeback its going to be considered somehing bit less than heroic.
The latest absurdity from the media has come from a sports journalist named Greg Couch, writing for Fanhouse. Couch joins the other journalists, putting on his little pleated skirt and sweater with the big orange T, gets out his pom poms and tells us why
Woods "stock" will rise again.
His first silly point is, that, like others have said before him ( and to date have been proved wrong), that Tiger Woods will get a lot of new sponsors and he wishes he could buy stock in Tiger Woods. This shows he doesn't know any more about stocks or the advertising business than he does about human nature. It is unlikely Woods will ever get a new endorsement contract again. For anything.
Then he talks about the media having a "war against Tiger Woods". Its hard to know what planet he's been living on, since if he means by war, simply reporting the facts as they come out, yes that's was news organizations tend to do. But just like him, just about every journalist on cable news and in print have come to Tiger's defense making ridiculous claims and predictions of favorable outcomes just like he did.
He also got down into the gutter so he could drag race into it by asking how "the old guard" ( presumably not Gillette's Right Guard) felt about a "black guy and all these white women", as if that had anything to do with anything. But this is just a cheerleading journalist trying to make brownie points..
What he seems to have forgotten is that Woods himself on a number of occasions has gone out of his way to say he is not black and doesn't consider himself so. In fact he turned down an invitation a few years ago to come to Shea Stadium to honor Jackie Robinson and the black athletes who broke the color barrier, citing the fact that he doesn't regard himself as black.
We havent heard a lot of defending of Woods in the last week, mostly because its finally become apparent to those trying to carry water for him, that what they were defending the indefensible. So they have kept quiet.
As we have seen all throughout the Tiger Woods story, the media just cant be trusted. And their opinions which they insist on giving us have been proved worthless and wrong about everything as they almost always are regardless whether its Tiger Woods or healthcare reform.
So, maybe that's why they kept trying to slant the story in Woods favor, predicting favorable outcomes and trying to diminish Woods problems. When it comes to not being trusted, it obviously takes one to know one.

I believe Tiger Woods will return to the game and play again at his highest level. I believe that winning more Majors than Jack Nicklaus continues to be his top priority--not adding to the hundreds of millions of dollars that he already has. I believe it will be extremely difficult for him to face the public but he will because there is no other option. Tiger's goal is to go down in history as the greatest golfer ever--no debate permitted.
His passion for golf and success will compel him to play again. If u were a golfer u might understand this.
You are a stupid writer.you don't know the facts. You wish Tiger Woods will be ruined by this scandal but just keep wishing because it will never happen. When he starts playing and winning as usual, worshippers will fall in line again. You are a moron writing an inaccurate article.where were you with the scandal of Edwards,Sanford,Craig,Spitzer and so many others!! Did you write about them too? What a liar .You and your kind(so-called journallist) are no better than Tiger Woods. You just cannot stand his dominance in his sport.
He simply the most famous person in the world, and arguably the best golfer of all time. To say that he won't get another sponsor and won't ever be the golfer he was is idiotic. Buy low sell high, Marc. Just think about how many people will tune in to watch Tiger's return to golf, and think about how many companies would like to have the advertising space on Tiger's chest, hat and bag. Or are you naive enough to think that every company has the unflappable moral compass of Marc Rubin?
This writer is part of the "media" and he is simply spewing opinion like those he complains of. What is remarkable is the paucity of confirmed facts. Elin Woods has said nothing publicly and Tiger Woods has only the statements on his website. There is a lot of hearsay from anonymous sources; some possibly paid? The "media" can't even seem to agree on whether his boat is still docked. I suppose this is par for the course in the gossip, tabloid media.
the truth is no one really knows what is going on except tiger and elin who aren't talking.so whatever story the media has from all these sources is just assumptions.n tiger will be back bigger coz unlike some others he didn't commit an unforgivable sin like rape or kill someone.he will be forgiven.n if not he just needs to play golf n ignore the rest of everyone coz i doubt he cares what people outside of his family think. n if it turns out his family is able to forgive n move on, who are we to tiger not to?
Marc Rubin.... you're an idiot. Yes there's a lot of disinformation put out there on the Tiger Woods story, many of the writers, or their sources, have some sort of agenda. For example, you can see now that two spins are coming out about the possible divorce; one camp claims that Elin will get $300 million, the other camp says that because of the prenup she won't get more than $20 million. These stories are possibly the product of the lawyers and the PR firms for Tiger and Elin trying to sway pubic opinion.
Nevertheless, there's no excuse for your idiotic conclusions. I'd like to nominate a new top five dumbest most idiotic statements of the year:
"It's unlikely Woods will get a new endorsement contract again. For anything."
Woods screwed up big time, no doubt, but he's a good golfer and he will win again on the golf course.
You're claim that Woods' stock will not "rise" again shows you truly know very little about golf, the stock market and the ad business.
You're an idiot if you think he'll never get another sponsorship...
The author overstates the case against Woods with typical hyperbole. The media will surely allow a "comeback" because it needs one in order to continue the story.
I believe Tiger will come back and once again dominate whatever course he sets foot on and sure his sleazy manager will find those sponsors willing to make a buck even if Tiger's name is forever tarnished. Be honest with yourselves, people, his name will forever be tarnished. History shows that individuals are first remembered by their faults and then whatever good they may have done. I have to agree with this article that his name will cause most women (with a back bone) to cringe and will give some men a poor excuse. These comments are sad because it's proof that America values success, passion ABOUT A SPORT and being known as the best more so than integrity, compassion and character. Tiger has none of these qualities and no matter how good he is now or will be in the future he's a sad individual. To the fans that still care about and defend him you need a new moral compass and a reality check on what's really important in life.
This is yet the most uninformed twitter gossip moron posing as a journalist. Personal prejudice in an opinion article shows how low this story goes.
"simply reporting the facts as they come out" I'm guessing refers to the women claiming flings and winks as mistress relationships ... and this seems to the be basis of "facts" as seen by this myopic scribbler.
Seems like this will be my last visit to this website.
Michael Jordan was a known cheater, when his wife forced him out and he still has endorsements. Kobe highly profiled affair still has major endorsements. I think we are showing are true bigotry, we all hate golf.
You know, it's articles such as this one, but make me distrust the media even more. Everybody is trying to scoop the other that there is no fact or source verification any more. Is Elin going to divorce Tiger? We really don't know. It used to be that a respectable news organization would go beyond hearsay, even wait for a press release or conference from Elin or her lawyer, or even an official court document before writing an article. I could go on and on with your prejudicial remarks (i.e. publishing conclusions without any real sources that YOU personally came up with), but it's harder and harder to disseminate what is real news and what is simply tabloid fodder. Thanks Mark for being yet another pseudo-reporter in the sea of media spam.
Frankly I don't care nor do I think what Woods does in his private time is any of my business - the man is famous for being an extraordinary golfer - no one has ever claimed he is or should be held up as a paragon of virtue.
If he wins another master's, or sets some other notable record in golf, by all means tell me about it -other than that I really don't give a steaming pile of feces.
Thank you say what u want golf was becoming a borning sport after Jack and Arnie Tiger is not the first to cheat and will not be the last get over it write about what is importing health insurance, jobs, war our young men and women fighting and dying I hope to see him next year play the game that he is the best at
I agree with Marc. The media has circled the wagons with Woods. They helped create the image and now they're trying to save it by making excuses for him and making favorable predictions about his future. It's just wishful thinking. The genie is out of the bottle and won't go back in.
I suggest the media drop their support for Woods and cut their losses because he's a loser in the game of life. If they want to adopt a new hero, let them do it. This time they should be more careful pick a real winner. They're out there.
Marc, thanks for calling out what this circus has become. But, it's not about Tiger's personal life. It's about theft of services from saying/projecting one thing and doing/being another. If Tiger was JUST a golfer without all the endorsements, childrens groups, hoopla around him, then fine. If he was single, then fine. He can have all the unprotected sex with anyone he wants and who cares? The real issue is what he deliberately represented to get and maintain those endorsements and how he lied and misrepresented himself to the companies that hired him and the fans and kids that look up to him. IT'S NOT OK for him to do what he did. He has lied and cheated EVERYONE.
IMHO, his PGA tour card should be revoked for at least this season and maybe forever. The damage that he has done to the tour and the game of golf is not repairable. I'll throw up if I hear one more time about his increasing the tours' purses. He's a liar, cheat, thief and is not becoming of a tour player.
Final word, that's funny! Elin should dump Tiger, and let him join Amway, along with his "girlfriends", as Amway also screws anything that moves. Amway is a scam, and here's why: Amway pays out as little money as they can get away with, so they support the higher level IBOs ripping off their downline via the tool scam. As a result, about 99% of IBOs operate at a net loss, while the top 1% make several TIMES more from their Amway tool scam than from the Amway products. Read about it on my blog, I suggest you start here: Google "Amway the rest of the story" and forward the information to everyone you know, so they don't get scammed.
I think he goes and plays in Europe and the rest of the world, where they probably don't care as much...wins big, and is begged to come back to "save" US golf.
I think 95% of you guys are jealous of Tiger because he was doing what you'd love to be doing...unfortunately, he got caught. Get off your moralizing and leave him alone. He's the best golfer in the world...nobody said he's the best husband.
I think he goes and plays in Europe and the rest of the world, where they probably don't care as much...wins big, and is begged to come back to "save" US golf.
Got something to say?
