With a new NBC/Wall Street journal poll showing Obama hitting his lowest approval rating in that poll, and the same poll showing that people are getting increasingly fed up with Obama, the Democrats and how both have handled health care,(how they handled it, not rejecting things that are in it, like the public option) those who supported Hillary Clinton for president in the Democratic primaries are starting to say "I told you so".
Obama's had the biggest approval ratings drop of any first year president in history. He has disappointed most of his supporters on the left. And he has accomplished little to nothing in his first year that has showed any concrete results in spite of him giving himself a B+ for his performance in his first year.
What he has done is make more speeches and had more prime time press conferences in his first year than any president has given in their entire first term.
On healthcare reform, most of his supportes are complaining that he sold out and was two faced in his capitulation. Which he was. But these are traits he exhibited not only during his entire 12 years of elected office, but were on glaring display during the Democratic primaries.
Now everyone is angry with him for showing a lack of principle, commitment, experience and expertise and his willingness to sacrifice any principle on a dime, but that's who Obama has always been and he showed it repeatedly during the primaries, whether he was willing to sell out the voters of Florida and Michigan to help himself get elected, or reversing himself on a pledge to use public financing.
Now as Obama's approval ratings continue to hit record lows for a first term president, and he is bringing the Democratic party down with him, as people are getting fed up with his handling of a propositon -- the public option and health care reform -- that 72% supported back in June, many Hillary Clinton supporters are starting to say "we told you so".
More and more of Obama's staunchest supporters, the same people who turned a blind eye to Obama's deep character flaws, lack of experience, and brazen political dishonesty and deceit, are now complaining that he's not what they thought he was, that this isnt change they can believe in. But it never was in the first place. It was clear to anyone who was paying attention, that "change you can believe in" was nothing but a slogan. Because he never did say what kind of change he had in mind.And if you asked a supporter they couldnt tell you either.
Ed Schultz, Arianna Huffington, the people at The Nation, Matt Taibbi at Rolling Stone, and Michael Moore are just a few of Obama flag wavers now wavering in their support and scratching their heads saying "what happened"?
The answer is nothing happened. Obama is being the same Obama he always was, the same Obama that was apparent during the Democratic primaries, the same Obama that 18 months ago after listening to a couple of speeches, caused me to write that he was a snake oil salesman and the most underhanded, deceitful politician since Richard Nixon. But the press. who was in Obama's pocket, refused to see it.Or report it.
For those who saw through the phoniness, Obama has been exactly what the majority of Democratic primary voters thought he was. Remember that Hillary Clinton actually received more votes than Obama, and went into the Democratic convention having won the popular vote.
During the primaries Clinton supporters mocked Obama supporters and their beliefs as people who were "drinking the Kool-Aid". Obama supporters accused Clinton supporters, and anyone who opposed Obama's candidacy of being racist. This was the state of the Democratic party courtesy of the candidate who ran on the proposition that he had a unqiue ability to unite people and bring them together. He ran on the fiction that he had some great ability to unite Democrats and Republicans and put an end to partisanship. Which is why every Republican is voting against the health care bill and he hasnt been able to unite any disparate group on anything.
In a recent article in Rolling Stone, Matt Taibbi writes, "Obama pulled a bait-and-switch on us. If it were any other politician, we wouldn't be surprised. Maybe it's our fault, for thinking he was different."
Yes it was your fault for not seeing what was right in front of your eyes. The fact that he pulled a bait and switch shouldnt leave anyone surprised. That was the snake oil Obama was selling during the primaries and a lot of people bought it and are now seemingly first waking up to the fact that it was all jsugar and water.
The reason people are feeling so stung by Obama is that he held himself up to be a different kind of politician, someone above the petty politics and back room deals of Washington. All the while engaging in petty politics and backroom deals. What also makes it particularly insidious is when a snake oil salesman goes into a community that is hurting and tells everyone he has the cure and its right in this here bottle when all along he knows its nothing but a bottle of empty promises. That's called a con. And now a lot of people who should have known better are realizing it.
It was clear during the primaries when Obama constantly reneged on promises and pledges and resorted to serial lying both when it came to Jeremiah Wright, and the incident in Ohio when a document was leaked that caught Obama red handed lying to the people of Ohio about his position on NAFTA.
He told the people in Ohio who were hurting economically precisely because of things in NAFTA, that if they elected him he'd get rid of NAFTA. At the same time he was telling the Canadian embassy to ignore what he said publicly in Ohio, that he had no intention of getting rid of NAFTA, that it was all just for politics. This is who they wanted to elect president? If anyone else had been caught doing the same thing, it would have finished their candidacy. But Obama's supporters turned a blind eye and now they are shocked, shocked, that he isnt fullfilling his promises.
If a politician is willing to prey on the misfortunes of people to get votes, raising their hopes, and making promises he knows he has no intention of fullfilling, nothing he does should surprise anyone.
But at the time it was exposed, the same people who are now complaining about Obama betraying them and selling them out ignored what happened in Ohio. If Clinton had been caught doing the same thing the press would have demanded she drop out of the race and would have said she couldnt be trusted.
The fact that Obama was clearly the least qualified candidate for the Democratic nomination, didnt seem to matter to his supporters either. And while he claimed he was the person who knew how to bring people together the Democratic presidential primaries were the most divisive in the history of the party.
In his campaign speeches he said "voices must be heard" but he did everything in is power to keep the voices of the voters in Florida and Michigan from being heard because he was landslided in both primaries by Clinton. Instead of fighting for the right to have their votes count on principle, he was quite content to have them silenced in favor of his own ambitions. So why are people surprised now that he sold them out on healthcare reform?
The other big issue that seemed to matter to Obama's supporters was that he was black. So they took everything Martin Luther King stood for and threw it out the window, which was that a person should be judged on the content of their character and not the color of their skin. Many of his supporters, including John Kerry who made no bones about it, decided the color of his skin mattered more.
But while this may come as a shock to them, Obama is not the first black president. He is the first mixed race president, half black and half white. He is no more the country's first black president than Derek Jeter was the Yankees first black shortstop. In all of Jeter's hall of fame career no one ever referred to him that way. But his genetic make up is the same as Obama's. The difference is the random shuffling of genetic material resulted in Jeter having more Caucasian features and a caramel complexion while Obama's features and complexion were more black. So maybe now that they feel betrayed by that too. Either that or maybe ,those who supported Obama because they wanted a black president will admit Martin Luther King was right the first time. Or maybe they will institute Half Black History Month.
During the primaries,Obama's selling out on his promises were rampant. He promised to use public financing if he was the nominee then reneged as soon as became the nominee. He promised to filibuster and vote against the FISA bill if it gave telecoms retroactive immunity then reneged, didnt filibuster and voted for it. And lied, until he couldn't lie any longer about his relationship with Jeremiah Wright and about NAFTA.
This is the person that liberals and Democrats who supported him are now surprised has sold them out when it was apparent that Obama was probably the most decietful politician since Richard Nixon. The difference between the two is that Nixon used deceit to get even. Obama used it to get ahead. It all goes to character and how that influences decisions. As well as having a vision and sticking up for a principle, something Obama never did on healthcare.
So, as Obama supporters now complain that Obama isnt the person they thought he was, perhaps Hillary Clinton supporters can be excused if they are now saying " We told you so". Because they did.

Thank you for writing about this. I hope all the fxxking progressives (whatever that means) at the lefty blogs and the media at large realize what they have done. Yes, I was one of those who had the good sense to see the real Obama very early on. What he and his supporters did during the Dem primary is unconscionable. And they did all that to make HIM (?) the president. It would have been at least good for the country if he had proved me wrong. Every bit of his failure is on the heads of his supporters who cheated us out of a qualified candidate in the Dem primary.
Liked the article and thought it was a very thoughtful angle - but I do have a small bone to pick with the approach. Most of the article focussed on Obama's flip-flopping/deceit/out-write lying - which, while true, can be said of any politician ever to get anywhere (save Jimmy Carter who was very honest and an outstanding human being, but a terrible president). Politicians play the game to get elected, that's how it works. I don't think Obama has done anything different than anyone else worth their salt that was ever involved in a campaign, and outrage directed his way, simply because the public bought into his message head-over-heels, is misdirected. There are many legitimate criticisms of Obama - mainly his inability to get anything significant accomplished - but I would prefer the debate be centered on concrete critiques such as that, rather than hurt feelings and shame from the public's own gullibility. Can't blame the snake-oil salesman for trying if you keep buying his product.

This is opinion piece off base. The first flaw is you premise your argument about Obama on poll numbers. Baloney. Hillary Clinton is not involved in the weeds of healthcare reform. Hillary Clinton doesn't have the responsibility of balancing the budget. Hillary Clinton isn't being blamed for millions of job losses. Obama is being blamed for ALL of it. HE successfully signed a stimulus, signed fair pay legislation, begun negotiating an arms treaty to reduce nukes with Russia, IS helping to get healthcare reform (whether you like the contents) through the Congress, is following through on his promise to double down on Afghanistan's "forgotten war." Hillary Clinton is doing what, exactly? Of course her numbers are high. You think the narrative of a weakling is being filled in, but once healthcare reform has passed, his numbers WILL skyrocket. Having written that blog, I can say that I wholeheartedly and unequivocally agree with you, Marc, as to who Obama is and waht tactics (underhanded and deceitful are just the start) -- but I put the blame on those responsible -- the Democratic National Committee. They had to know what -- and who -- Obama was, and yet they chose to aid and abet him. The Rules and Bylaws meeting of 5/31/2008 was the biggest sack of you-know-what in Democratic Party history.
If the DNC had simply gotten out of the way, rather than let Obama skirt the rules again and again (or outright break them), Hillary would've been the Democratic Party nominee, and Hillary would be our POTUS right now.
And we'd not be in this horrible mess.

I've said again and again that Obama was and remains inexperienced; Obama just isn't up to the task. And for the DNC, the superdelegates, and most especially Nancy Pelosi to have overrode the will of the voting public (Hillary won the primaries and had the most votes; she also won two of the last three primaries) is unconscionable.
I started this additional comment because I made an error in the previous one; forgive me, but I typoed. I should've said "what" rather than the typo w-a-h-t . . . and I lost track of my focus when I was trying to explain what I saw regarding the Obama campaign's tactics, most especially in the caucuses. (Most of Obama's lead was due to the caucuses, and every single one of them had errors or problems. After hearing both speak during the New Hampshire primaries, I knew he was unfit and Hillary was ready to serve on day one. She was amazing in her knowledge and ability to speak and connect with the crowds. While I hated, HATED what was done to her by her own party, like Hillary I have remained a Democrat. The fastest way to regain the party we knew is to work from within. If throwing out every single Dem now in office is the best way to do it, then look out in 2010!

I watch closly, I thought with Hillary.I was as well busy with the fraud in what he was doing and lying of.However many did not want to see .They could not go back and fouth and see the truth of the lying mouths of MSNBC-CNN-ABC-CBS-NBC. I'm highly critical of Obama, but at the end of the day, he hasn't done anything that Hillary would not have done as well. Among other reasons is the fact that half the people advising him are from the Clinton camp. So again, please get over it.
HOw can you idiots possibly think that Clinton would have done any different? THey are marching lock-step together, with the same big corporations (OK, maybe not the exact same ones, but regarless....) Yes, we have been saying these things since the debates - actually 2 years now. Now that his supporters are feeling betrayed, yes, this is our time to say "We told you! You did not want to hear us."
Hillary is working for us. I never faulted any move she made from campaigning as a loyal Democrat for the ticket - as she SAID she would (and making more stops and speeches than any former opponent ever did) - to accepting Secretary of State. She is doing a phenomenal job at State, and we all still love her and are proud of her. I saw an article yesterday quoting a 75% approval rating. She's a woman of her word. She makes us look good to the world. If Copenhagen went down the drain, it was not for HER lack of effort. She's so good - too good for State to be her last stop.
And we were right about those damned caucus frauds too! I saw it in thirteen states with my own eyes. When Bush did that in one state for years my fellow dems stood up against it but, when it was Obama and Axelrod gamed the system to deny voting rights no one thought it was "wrong" He is BUSH LITE and always was. The reason the media pushed for him so hard just like they did Bush is HE was the one who would play ball and they knew it on Wall street and in the health insurance industry. WAKE UP. They were afraid Hillary would not play ball and earn the party the dollars Obama would. It was all a sham and you all who fell for the "feel good" b.s. ought to have the moral dignity to own up. We could have had experience, a woman, a liberal AND progress. No candidate is perfect but she was a damned sight better than this piece of work from Chicago.

He hoodwinked the naive and idealistic people in this country. They voted for him based on a hope so false and ignorant that you'd have to be accused of being a fool for ignoring the ref flags...unless you are a in favor of socialism.
I'm a conservative, and I would trade in Obama and his entourage for Hillary in a New York minute! She'd be a far better President in every respect.
Rather than wring our individual hands about it, why not join together, conservatives and progressives, and make a bold statement too loud for Washington and the Media to ignore?
