Oakland Raiders Monday odds and ends

Just wrapping up a few things from player and coach availability time from the Oakland Raiders.

  • The injury to Robert Gallery will upset the balance of the offensive line. The strongest consideration is sliding Chris Morris over to guard and starting Samson Satele at center. However, Khalif Barnes, Erik Pears, and Paul McQuistan are options to cover at left guard. Cable said, "We've got to look at it like the plan to fix the next month where we can be productive that way."
  • The ability to make the protection calls is vital to the Raider center, and is something that Satele has issues with.
  • Don't expect to see Chaz Schilens back for the Denver game on Sunday to be the target that Russell needs. Coach Cable says that he is not ready yet. "I would say very, very little, although he is out of the boot and moving around. As we talked about last week, he'll do a little more this week. Out, as they told me Thursday, we'll see."
  • Cable gave credit to Shane Lechler for his role in keeping the Raiders in the game. "Absolutely not. That's the guy that's in the Pro Bowl and may be one of the best punters to ever play the game. Think about the first two punts, how he absolutely changed the football game. The coverage was great, no question about that, but not only did he hit it deep, he hit it high and gave everybody a chance to get down there, too. You have to take your hat off to him."
  • Cable didn't come out and say that the Raiders partied too much as Greg Ellis had during the  preseason. However, he did say that the Raiders need to immerse themselves in the game. "The adjustments are at work, in terms of the meetings and at practice, those type of things. I think when you're - and hopefully you'll understand what I'm saying - when you're as young as we are in some areas, you have to learn how this is your job and this has to consume you that way. It's not like when you leave the office you just check out and just go into the real world and do whatever. You don't do that in football. It's just not possible. I think we have to learn to embrace that mentality a little bit better."
  • Cable wouldn't single out Russell when asked, but he said that Russell was part of the entire offense. Its not hard to read between the lines that Russell is still having some work-ethic issues.

Watching Peyton Manning last night - he's worthy of a top pick. Russell is nowhere near a peyton manning - he's a Bust and should be cut. Russell may have slightly better arm strength and heigth, but that's all he has over Manning. He can't make touch passes, he can't move around the pocket - too slow and clumbsy. He doesn't have the leadership or exude confidence that one would expect from a top pick. He doesn't appear smart enough to pick apart defenses - which is what should be expected from a top pick. He is a Bust - better to move forward now than tho wait years to do what should be done now.
He reminds me a lot of Jeff George. It is embarrassing being a fan of a mismanged organization. Atleast, Davis is consistent.

You know what they say, your basically stuck with a top draft pick QB for 5 years. Don't blame AL, he's one of the best owners in the NFL. If you know your football, he's done so much for the NFL. We were just in the Super Bowl 6-7 years ago! I'm sure alot of teams would like to say that, including all in our division!! Quit bashing the Raiders, your just jealous!! 3 super bowls baby!

In lieu of yesterdays venting, I was in favor of drafting Russell. I don't think you can pass up a QB with that much potential and run the risk of another team ending up with great QB when you had the chance of drafting him. However, at this point in his career his flaws are very disturbing. His lack of leadership, accuracy, vision and completely locking on to his first read make it hard to believe he will reach his potential anytime soon, if at all. We need to win games now and don't have the luxury of just saying it's "growing pains". This team can win the division. One loss can be the difference in not making the playoffs. We need to have another option at the QB position, where we can still bring him along but have another player to help us win winable games. Forget about it being his team, ruining his confidence and all of that, if he needs to be pulled to win the game, then pull him. WE NEED TO WIN NOW.

To be honest, I want to like Russell...I really do! I just want to see more from him by now. You now Rich Gannon didn't have a ROCKET arm, but he was Smart and knew how to run an offense at the line. I don't know if we'll ever get that from Russell....I'm hopeful, but when he can't even complete passes to his running back, GOD help us!

Robert Raider - Stop living in the past.
You said, Al is one of the best owners, based on what?
Al Davis is not great, not even mediocre in today's game. Fact: In the past 6 seasons, no team has lost more games than the Raiders. At one time his organization was great, it no longer is. Over the past ten years, he's had more draft busts than any organization. Even the Cardinals and Falcons are better run than the Raiders. No top coach will work for Al because Al selects the assistant coaches, Al drafts the players and Al chooses who will play. When the team loses Al hires a new scape goat, but the one constatnt behind the losing is Al Davis. You can say Al was great, but he no longer is. The game has passed Al. Ron Wolf - he was the brains behind our great drafts - he left and built the packers into winners

Why do you think Seymour was late in reporting? If you're going to say something stupid like Al Davis is one of he best owners have some reason to back it up

Russell looks like a HOF QB to Me. Give Him time. The Broncos better watch out. I see Him passing for 23-27-394 yds 4 Td's. I think this Kid is going to be great. The coaching is what's holding Him back. You have this smart stronged armed and complete leader at QB, being wasted by one of the dumbest coaches alive (Cable). You can tell when you watch Russell play that He is scratching His head at Cable's play calling. Russell is to smart to have only 2 to 3 plays called. If Cable would let Russell call His own plays then We would have a great offense. Russell called His own plays at LSU and he was great. He is one of the smartest QB's I have seen for His age. His demeanor is one of complete coolness. When cable smartens up and gets up to the level of Russell, we will have a great team. Let the strong buck play cable! I just don't think cable likes Russell very much. maybe Russell is too Hip-Hop for Him? Russell is not a yes sir not sir type of pimp, so cable gets irritated.

Yo! Y'all can't handle a Pimp at QB! Super Fly Jroc is Huggie bear. Bring in a coach who can relate to this Pimp. What does cable know about being a Blk man in america? This Kat came up poor. This kat beat the odds and earned His way to the pro;s. Next year we need to bring in Dungy. Dog Dungy can relate to this proud blk young man! DD was one of the smartest coaches to coach in NFL history. All Im sayin is we need to put Jroc with the peeps that can help Him realize His greatness. Allow this young man to be the kat He is. A super Fly Pimp! Yall dont get it and never will.

You all need to relax on JRuss. Did he not come thru in the 4th qtr against SD? Did he not come thru in the 4th qtr this past weekend? Did he not come thru in the 4th qtr when down by 10 to TB? His teammates are follwing him and call him a leader. So it does not matter what you or I think. All you whinners out there are in the wrong business. Instead of writing on these blogs you should be GM's cause you seem to know more about football than Mr. Davis.

Jeff hill : Why dungy Pimp? I know a good mexican coach that won two superbowl for oaktown. goes by the name of MR Flores. He had a pretty good mexican QB by the name of Plunket.I think the jets rookie QB Sanchez, I would trade him straight up for JRuss

Hey Valdez, that was the funniest post I have ever read. You got jokes my man. I believe Russell could still be good, but take it easy. Your calling HOF with a different coach? Jeff Hill, come on man, when you make 60 million dollars you learn to relate to your boss, not the other way around. This dudes been playing football his whole life, Cable is not ruining him. He just needs to adjust to the NFL. Lets hope this is the week he breaks out. 100 yds will probably not cut it again. I've got a feeling that JRuss is going to get it done

You can't teach height or throwing the ball 80 yards just like you can't teach intuition, leadership, and ability to feel the pocket. JaGarbage has been given EVERYTHING - money, patience from coaches, teammates, and they even got rid of a QB that would be starting next week if he wasn't cut (on a sane team). He has horrible mechanics and often runs pass plays that look like practice plays (audible to fly routes)... next week will be a big test - he has to lead this team and perform or get out of the way. This isn't college. If he continues to struggle and we lose the team will implode... given the Raiders' track record over the last 6 years, I know how this will go, unfortunately.

I think Diamond Jim hit it on the head. The fact that JaMarcus wasn't pulled at half time with that dismal performance shows you who's really pulling the strings....Al Davis...he's stubborn and it's killing our season already! Charlie Gradkowski should've come in and helped out...any HS coach would have yanked Russels' ass out of the game by the end of the 3rd quarter...come on! We are making all the jokes a reality with this insane behavior. I am a die hard Raider fan...always will be but, come on...help a brotha out!

Yo! Oakraiders! That's a lot of mexican propaganda? Good Shyt though. I hear ya man. I loved Flores, and Plunkett aint no real mexican. Isn't he Cuban? He has a Pig face! But He was a good QB for the Silver & Black! Honestly I would rather see a Brotha at QB. I know that sounds bad, but it's true. If a White guy wants a white QB or Mexican wants a mex QB I am fine with that. It's all good. No feelins hurt here. As free people we should be free to express ourselve's Without fury. I can eat a Chitlin, Burrito, and apple pie it's all good brotha's! " Black, Brown, and White to unite, it's all right, not to fight because our future's are bright, step into the light our destiny is in sight, we are all Human in this plight, we all must get along and with all we just might."
A good friend of mine wrote that to me when I was feeling like the whole world was against me. Peace out Brotha's!

Fellas,Fellas, Fellas let's calm down and take a breath. Obviously, Kansas City's game plan was let JaMarcus beat them. Stop the running game. The receivers have no experience, and shut down Zach Miller. Give it to the Chiefs, not a bad plan. But, wait a minute, there is a overweight Quarterback whose missing his targets all day, suddenly making plays and pulling his team out of a near defeat. It ain't pretty, but, it sounds like our mantra from the good ole days. "JUST WIN BABY".

Actually I think we have a solution for Robert Gallery's injury. We need to put the Bumbling Blob JM on the line in his place and then say some hail Mary's for the complete fool who cut Garcia.

Making comparisons to Jeff George and Jay Schroeder is an extreme insult to those former athletes who took themselves and their jobs seriously and stayed in shape and did not embarrass the fans with their petulant nonchalance and refusal to take the QB job at OAKLAND Seriously!! If he was at Tampa Bay or Buffalo I would not give a fig about his indifference.

I am amazed at the degree of indifference that the "fans" who post here and think that everything is going to be all right and that JM is our QB -- BS !!

After all the wishful thinking, hoping for the best, and painful reality; here is what I believe as a fan. Tom Cable has what it takes to coach a team to success. I won't get into my reasons, but it's something I think will be proven in time. The Raiders are a talented team that look better than they have in quite a few years. They will never (EVER) win the AFC West with Jamarcus Russell as the starting QB. I would love to be wrong on this, but many of you know this to be true. I don't feel confident when he is under center and I don't think he will ever be a true leader. That is just how I feel. Al Davis will not easily admit his mistake and draft another QB in 2010. Garcia was not a long term solution, but someone has to be. It's not Russel.

Please stop with the " He lead us to the go ahead score vs SD and came through in the KC game."

The fact of the matter is, that he is the one that put us in the position to have to come from behind to win.

If we had any other QB, any other, that SD game would have been out of reach for the Chargers.

If we had anybody else in that KC game, we would have won 31-10. Easily.

So yeah, he threw a lucky 57 yard pass to Murphy. Yeah, he completed 4 of 7 on the final drive to beat KC.

But do you guys just forget about the first 58 minutes of the game? the 3 for 12 for 42 yards?

Anybody else think that if he had completed at least 50% of his passes prior to the final drive, instead of 25%, and kept the offense on the field, the KC game would not have needed a come from behind win?

Yes New Mexico Raider, I am talking to you.

The last line of this article calls into question Russells work ethic. My God! If Russell is not putting in the time it takes then why in the blazes should he get any benefit of the doubt? He should be living in the tape room and working to improve constantly. If he is not the first one into practice and the last one out after the way hes been playing then why in the hell should we keep starting him? He has to commit himself to the team if he wants the team to carry him through his struggles. If he's half assing his game preperation and partying up through the week then lets bench his sorry ass. Put the best team on the field, not the highest salaried team on the field. Why do we pay him so much? To win. If he's the main reason we are losing then bench him. Why not pay him to sit instead of pay him to keep losing. One fourth quarter drive per game doesn't cut it. He needs to put four quarters of good ball together and if he is not capable of this then put in Frye or G man. Go Raiders!

To Jeff Hill.....Jamarcus can be any super fly pimp type of jerk he wants to be if he's a good quarterback come game time. Problem is that he sucks. Trying to be "super fly" is killing his chances of being a top flight QB in the NFL. As for Tony Dungy...he wouldn't take half the garbage from Jamarcus that Cable is. Dungy would stop the super fly bs in a heartbeat. He'd bring this kid back to reality and to being a positive role model for young black men through a hard work ethic and involving himself with the community.
