The 2009 Village Halloween Parade brought all sorts of creatures to lower Manhattan on Saturday, including a group of feuding plants and zombies. To celebrate the success of Plants vs. Zombies, representatives of PopCap games, along with fans of title and local zombie enthusiasts, took over 6th avenue as they performed the game live for thousands of parade watchers.
“We were looking for a way to celebrate the huge success of Plants vs. Zombies and get the fans involved as well, representative for PopCap Laura Jackson said. “The parade is organic and open to all sorts of creative expression, so we knew we would have a lot of freedom as things evolved.”
The group tossed Plants vs. Zombies games and schwag into the crowd as they rambled down the street. Fans of the game walked with the group in homemade costumes. The best dressed zombie earned the long-sleeved shirt, hoodie and down vest worn by “Zombieland” star Jesse Eisenburg.
Staggering along with the plant and zombie crew was NYC Zombie Crawl, a local group that hosts undead pub-crawls through the city. The corpse-centric club organizes events year-round including runs through Whole Foods, and an attack at the red carpet for the premier of “Zombieland.”
“Being zombies ourselves, we had to answer the call,” NYC Zombie Crawl ringleader, Doug Sakmann said. “So we came down to spread the infection.”
