Gamers of all ages were invited to the Nintendo World Store on Saturday to celebrate the release of the New Super Mario Bros. Wii. There were many attractions created for the event, and even the rain could not keep people from stopping by to check out the party.
Before stepping into the store, customers had a chance to browse the Super Mario Bros. museum filled with historical items from the plumber brother’s past. According to assistant PR manager David Young, the archive featured a selection of items that follow the brothers from their 1985 launch to the present.
“There are some really great pieces in there celebrating Mario’s 24 year-old history,” Young said.
The outdoor exhibit displayed such memorabilia as Super Mario Bros. lunch pails, old commercials, a Mario cake pan and Princess Peach shampoo. Among the crowd examining the collection were two long-time fans of the boys in overalls.
“I’m just a big kid,” Jennifer Joseph said. “I love Nintendo and I just had to come down. It’s very nostalgic to see the old cartridges.”
Joseph’s companion, Paolo Mierdes was thrilled about the return of 2D scrolling in the game.
“It’s great to see Nintendo going back to the old school style after using other formats,” Mierdes said.
Additionally, attendees had a chance to purchase the New Super Mario Bros. Wii before Sunday’s launch date. As the rain came down, dedicated gamers braved the long line outside the store, waiting to get their hands on the game.
The New Super Mario Bros. Wii is now available at retail stores nationwide. The game is an updated, re-developed version of the original game, and comes with a highly anticipated multiplayer option.

I was there too. Of course, seeing as I am the Classic Video Games Examiner, I looked at the event from the perspective of fidelity to the series. In terms of difficulty of the game and their presentation of older artifacts from the Mario timeline, I was impressed.
