Two NYC musicians are taking instruments and gaming to the next level as “Modal Kombat,” a hybrid of performance art and video game battles. Using modern classical music, emerging technology and popular culture, the show entertains audiences around Europe and the US with classic games from the past.
“People usually have a great time,” David Hindman, co-founder of Modal Kombat said. “Often people will remark that they didn't expect the show to be so funny.”
Titled “Guitar Hero is Dead,” the show is a video game battle-royale featuring the original music of Hindman and Evan Drummond. As Hindman and Drummond play their guitars, software developed by Hindman allows them to control the action of characters in such games as Mortal Kombat, Tetris and Mario Kart. Using musical parameters including pitch and volume, Hindman and Drummond can execute any number of moves.
“It’s Guitar Hero with real guitars,” Hindman said.
To keep the show fresh, the two are working on bits featuring classic games like Frogger and Qbert.
“I'm also thinking about doing the light cycle game from TRON,” Hindman said.
Catch “Guitar Hero is Dead” at Monkeytown in Williamsburg on July 18th at 11p.m. (58 North 3rd Street, between Kent and Wythe) by reserving your tickets now. Tickets not claimed before 11p.m. are given away. Also performing are Three Fifty Duo and electro-pop artist Paul Feder.
