19 year-old David Scherer will attempt to break a world record by playing a video game for 72 hours straight.
On January 3, Scherer will begin playing the game Grand Theft Auto 4. He hopes to continue for three days.
The current Guinness world record for longest play of a video game belongs to Chirantan Patnaik, a 26-year-old player who set the record in September of 2009. He played for 40 hours and 21 minutes. Patnaik took the title from Jim Patton, a writer/producer who played for 28 hours straight in April of 2008.
Scherer, a swim coach for the Fort Campbell Swimming Eagles, wants to turn this record-setting event into a fundraiser for his team. Scherer wishes to raise enough money to construct an indoor pool facility for his teammates.

Mediocrity at its best. Just because this sets a "record" doesn't make it deserving of a donation.... I'd rather see this guy on the corner with a cardboard sign asking for cash to build a pool, at least he'd be grouped appropriately with all the other beggars.
That's not a record, I do that at least once a month.
I'm guessing at least a thousand video gamers have broken this "record" already. I know people who go for 24+ hours regularly (sadly).
I definitely played Demon's Souls for near 30 hours straight because it's the hardest game EVER! But still fun. This record is a a joke. 90% of users on WoW probably break this every weekend.
When wrath of the lich king came out, I played it for over 80 hours straight... where's my book?
HAHAHA Not saying im better than anyone because of this, because it is VERY sad in fact. But when Burning Crusade came out for WoW I played for nearly 5 days without a break. Haha I took a vacation from work that week because of it and was second person on my server to lvl 70. So yeah who cares about your GTA play time...that game sucks anyway!
Small world. I work at Wal-Mart and this exact guy came in and purchased that game at my register.
*Waves*
Koreans have DIED playing gams for longer than this, it's not a real record in any way.
