Thursday night, Antibalas, the band behind the hit musical Fela! played a midnight show at Brooklyn's Knitting Factory. The band jammed afrobeat for a packed house. Lead singer Amoyo channeled the style and spirit of legendary Nigerian musician Fela Kuti, who founded the Afrobeat movement in the 70's. Fela fused traditional African rthymns with the funk sounds of James Brown and the politics of Black American protest of the time.
Antibalas returns to the Knitting Factory next week to perform a sold out New Years Eve show. Tonight, Monday December, 21st, Amayo performs with his Fu-Arkist-Ra, guest starring members of the Fela! cast. Book tickets at the Knitting Factory's website.
