After a hiatus, the Brokelyn 25 has returned. The weekly feature will tour all 25 bars with coupons in the Brokelyn Beer Book. To catch up on bars already covered, see last week's Index page. Visit Brokelyn for more details on the book and how to get on the waiting list for the next edition.
The Bell House should be familiar to regular readers. The Gowanus bar, club and music venue has been the site of events as disparate as Good Spirits, the recent food and cocktail celebration sponsored by Edible Brooklyn and Donuts are Forever 4, the tribute party to fallen Hip-hop producer J Dilla. There are frequent cook-offs, including last weekend's Lamb Takedown, not to mention blogger meetups, singles nights, concerts and weekly comedy shows.
The venue is broken up into two spaces, the smaller bar room in the front and the large open room in the back. The back room is where the bigger shows end up. The stage in the center of the room is close enough for all to see but allows plenty of space for a crowd. This is a blessing when the house is packed, but it can be pretty sad if the act doesn't draw enough people. Last week's show by the Cherry Poppin' Daddies looked deserted next to the front room, full of bloggers.
That room is rustic and loungy, full of overstuffed leather couches and armchairs with a corner devoted to screenings and smaller performances.
Bars in both rooms offer a quality selection beer and cocktails including many local craft brews and a few some trashy favorites.
