Thursday night, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and Brooklyn Based hosted the second in their Linnean Libation League series, this one focused on beer and the harvest. The events invite guests to learn a bit more about the science and history behind what we imbibe while surrounded by the beauty of the garden and a relaxed atmosphere.
With the theme of Oktoberfest in mind, the party featured beer that represents the history of beer. Burkhard Bilger of The New Yorker spoke to the audience about each of the beers on hand, highlighting in particular the offering from Dogfish Head. Their Midas Touch is made using ingredients found in casks in the tomb of the ancient king. Other brewers offered representation of other periods in the history of beer.
From Thomas Hooker, an Oktoberfest beer which follows the standards set forth by the German beer purity laws. Smuttynose poured a Belgian-style ale while Doc's Draft gave out hard cider.
Snacks included artisanal cheese, crackers and pickles made locally.
