Despite the surge of frat bars, it's still possible to find more entertaining performances than Beer Pong matches in the Lower East Side. The Mixer series, hosted at Cakeshop on Ludlow Street by Melissa Febos and Rebecca Keith offers something smarter. For the last two years, the monthly event features literary readings by authors and poets as well as musical performances.
Last night's Mixer starred poets Tess Taylor, Jeffrey McDaniel, Mark Bibbins and author, Steve Geng reading recently published and new work. The evening ended with Richard Baluyut of Versus performing a solo set of his own songs.

This sounds awesome, when is the next one?
It was a lot of fun. I plan to make it a regular stop. They do it the third Wednesday of every month, which would make the next one February 17th. Check the Facebook page for details, including the guest list ahead of the performance.
