Situated at the center of the Northside of Williamsburg, steps away from the Bedford Avenue station, Spike Hill is more than just the Irish Pub it appears to be. The varied selection of beer and liquor far surpasses the Blarney Stone. The array of bottled beer on offer is lined up along the bar for several feet. The whiskeys are available in flights ranging from the basic to the highest ends.
The menu, full of seemingly simple items like wings, burgers and sandwiches spins it all with gourmet touches. The Castro Sandwich, an off the menu favorite, is a grilled cheese sandwich with tomatoes and onions, pickles and peppers and loads of cheese. The balance of the ingredients changes on any given day, making it a little different each time. The wings occasionally trade the usual buffalo sauce for Vietnamese chili sauce and recently, the burger toppings include rashers of Irish Bacon in addition to the typical ones.
Despite all this, Spike Hill stands as a relaxed neighborhood pub, with no pretensions of a higher calling. It's wide selection is stable and rarely changes. It does not court the beer geek crowd and it's the last place you'll see a beer festival. ...
Recently, the bar expanded next door into a space with another bar and a stage. There they have performances, always free, several times a week. Find the performance schedule on the bar's website.
