If you're a wine geek on a budget, run don't walk to Bar Henry Bistro, the new wine bar on Houston Street. A spinoff of Cafe Henri, this wine bar sells rare, older wines at eminently affordable rates.
The bar offers a good deal for wine fans that want to sample older bottles without breaking the bank. Try out a glass of a 20 year old Bordeaux or a Rhone from the year you graduated from High School for a decent price. At most restaurants and bars, higher end wines are sold only by the bottle, Bar Henry offers half of a bottle's contents for sale. The rest then needs to be cleared out. It's marked down to a discounted price and written up on the mirror across from the bar.
You can either split half a bottle with friends of an older bottle, or sit by the bar and wait for someone else to order a taste of something special and try out some of the rest at the by the glass price.
In addition to the wine specials, the bar offers regular limited specials, like last month's Tom and Jerrys. The heated eggnog-like drink warmed the bones of 15 patrons a night before it retired for the evening. Check in any given night and see what's on for the evening.
