Harlem to welcome provocative bestselling author and poet Kola Boof to share her womanist stories and music about relationships, sexuality, pride and politics.
Today's Kiss & Tell Report.
Controversial author Kola Boof is known for speaking her mind. The New York Times called Kola Boof "The African Garbo," and many others have called her a dangerous woman since she admitted to being the former mistress of terrorist Osama Bin Laden against her will.
Always outspoken, Kola Boof will set the record straight when she appears at The National Black Theatre of Harlem on Friday, May 28th at 7pm to sing and recite. I am proud to announce that I will introduce Ms. Boof at the event. The word "womanist" which is embraced by Kola Boof was first used in print by one of my favorite professors, Chikwenye Okonjo Ogunyemi, renowned women's studies scholar. The National Black Theater is located at 2031 Fifth Avenue, New York, New York 10035; and admission is free.
The following day the courageous Kola Boof will be at Hue-man Bookstore also in Harlem, Saturday May 29th from 4 pm to 6 pm. You can also hear Ms. Boof read on Tuesday June 15th at Madame X in New York City when she's honored at my monthly storytelling series Abiola's Kiss and Tell Live Revue.
Here's the official Kola Boof press release:
The first Black writer ever to win Sweden's Gavinna Till Gavinna Prize for Non-Fiction, Egyptian-Sudanese- American author Kola Boof will headline a singing and book reading recital at two legendary Harlem landmarks this May--The National Black Theatre in Harlem on May 28th at 7pm, Hue-man Bookstore of Harlem on May 29th from 4 pm to 6 pm.
Dubbed "The African Garbo" by The New York Times, Boof is a powerfully acclaimed literary stylist and social activist often despised for her candor.
Born Naima Bint Harith in Omdurman, Sudan, Kola Boof was one of the first writers to alert America about the catastrophe that continues to unwind in her homeland. The highest ranking woman in the SPLA despite the "sexism" of detractors within the group, Boof was an early advocate against the Biblically-proportioned plagues afflicting that once-beautiful country: genocide, starvation, rampant rape, and predation by modern-day slavers.
In 1979, Ms. Boof was adopted by a Black American couple and raised in Washington D.C. She later returned to North Africa as an adult activist, freedom fighter and writer.
Kola Boof's presentation will encompass singing and dramatic recitals and cover material from the books of hers that are available in America presently.
Boof, who describes herself as a womanist writer in the tradition of Alice Walker, Toni Morrison and Terry McMillan, has also been called "The most controversial woman in the world" by CNN News, was featured in a two-part interview by MSNBC News for an affair (against her will) with Osama Bin Laden in 1996 and is considered outspoken for her use of nudity and for her war on "colorism" in the black community. Boof will read from her autobiography "Diary of a Lost Girl", her shocking and gripping collection of short fiction, "Long Train to the Redeeming Sin: Stories of African Women", her beautiful and angry landmark book of poetry, "Nile River Woman", and her epic novel "Flesh and the Devil", all published by Door of Kush Press. An upcoming novel, "Virgins In the Beehive" will be previewed.
Often maligned by the press, Kola Boof plans to discuss the media's mis-reporting of her experiences with Osama Bin Laden, accusations by Whitney Houston experts that the lead character in Boof's upcoming hip hop novel "Virgins In the Beehive" is based on Whitney Houston, the racist accusations by many black activists that Boof is a "Jew lover" and her feelings about having an abortion at the age of 17.
Video: Kola Boof performs her new anthem, "The Beautiful Ones Are Not Yet Born." Kola Boof is the author of "Diary of a Lost Girl", "Flesh and the Devil" and was the Mistress of Osama Bin Laden. She wrote for the daytime operas including "Days of Our Lives." Her newest book is "Virgins In the Beehive" (Atlantic Library) coming this ye. She is a mother of two sons.
