The New York Road Runners announced, today that they were able to raise almost half of a million dollars for Haiti, the charity run in Central Park February 20th. NYRR stated in their press release, that they "raised more than $400,000 for New York City’s Haiti Relief Fund, administered by the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City."
The New York Road Runners further stated:
The New York running community embraced the Run for Haiti with unbridled enthusiasm. In just 18 days of open registration for the event, nearly 10,500 runners and walkers signed up, including some 400 who registered on race day. “There is only one way to begin this race, and that is by saying ‘Thank you, thank you, thank you,’” said NYRR president and CEO Mary Wittenberg, speaking at the start. “People said we were crazy to try to put this race together so quickly, and we said, ‘You don’t know runners.’ With our partners at Parks, we found an open date, and we all worked together to make it happen.”
Weather-wise, it couldn't not have been a more idea February morning. The sun was out, and the breeze was minimal. New York Road Runners generally cap the Central Park races at 5000 participants, as a matter of safety and logistics. Last Saturday, there were more than double that amount. Despite the large swelling of participants, the event was very smooth, and the crowd was well behaved.
