By now it's a cliche that American Jews celebrate Christmas by going to the movies and then eating out at a Chinese restaurant. There is no shortage of other Jewish events this week, especially for young singles.
Wednesday evening December 23rd at 7:00 PM Joe's Pub at The Public Theater presents HEEB Storytelling: Heeb Magazine (The New Jew Review) presents Heeb Storytelling: part cabaret, part Catskills, this popular series pushes the very notion of a Jewish story to the brink. Guaranteed to be a fearlessly funny evening of 7-minute stories. According to HEEB the line up will include "Jackie "The Joke Man" Martling (Jackie’s Joke Hunt, The Howard Stern Show), comedian Jessi Klein, Onion writer Aaron Kheifets, standup comedian DC Benny, writer Peter Hyman (The Reluctant Metrosexual) and more, featuring the accordion playing of DJ Kool Jew." But according to Joe's Pub, "Heeb Magazine's critically acclaimed Storytelling series returns to New York City for a night of irreverent storytelling: seven-minute tales by actor Nathan Phillips, comedian Jenny Rubin, writer Amy Sohn, musician Robin Gelfenbien and others. Hosted by comedian Hannibal Buress." A one-year New York Magazine subscription, a $9.97 value, will be included with ticket purchases made online or over the phone for all performances. Two years ago Susie Essman performed at Heeb Storytelling; an excerpt of her monologue is on youtube:
If HEEB Storytelling offends your sense of modesty consider Debbie Greenblatt's talk "Grow Yourself: Grow Your Soul," in which she discusses how to become a better person. Congregation Ohav Sholom, 270 West 84th Street, Wednesday December 23rd, 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM. A light dinner will be served. Cost is $10 for members, $15 for non members. RSVP's requested to office@osnyc.org or call (212) 877-5850.
Christmas Eve, Thursday December 24th offers several Jewish events in NYC.
HEEB Magazine presents Heebonism (a pun on the magazine's name and hedonism), the annual event that the Travel Channel recently called, "one of the largest, glitziest, rowdiest and most untamed shindigs in the world." That’s right, the mother of all Christmas Eve parties, Heebonism, is back in Manhattan's Chinatown at Fontana’s 105 Eldridge Street, 8:00 PM to 3:00 AM. Tickets are available online* for $20 each (buy four or more for $15 each) until December 23, then $25 at the door. Free vodka pouring for the first hour, courtesy of 360 Vodka. Featuring a live performance by The Shondes and DJ sets from Ohio Party, Balagan, DJ Kool Jew and Cowboy Mark. Plus, Strip Dreidel with KinkyJews. Co-sponsored by BANGitOUT.
