The seventh class of the Environmental Police Academy are protecting the city's water supply now that they have graduated.
Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Acting Commissioner Steven Lawitts attended the graduation ceremony for the 15 new recruits in Kingston.
In referencing the enthusiastic cadets Lawitts said, "We welcome the new members to our force and wish them well as future guardians of the safety of our water supply system."
DEP Police undergo an intense 20 week program in police procedures and environmental law. The Academy was the first of its kind in the nation when it began in 2002.
Graduates of the program police New York's complex network of reservoirs, lakes and 6,200 miles of water pipes, tunnels and aqueducts. That complex pumps out one billion gallons of water each and every day to more than nine million residents in the state.
