I started listening to CRYSTAL NECKLACE by TOTAL SLACKER during the time I was counting a stack of one dollar bills. Without including the reasoning for me counting, and sorting this money, I think this music is a perfect, cheap thrill of literally slacker music to go along with the aesthetic of a stack of dirty, old, and increasingly meaningless pieces of paper. TOTAL SLACKER sings in a way that implies lack of energy, but they incorporate such a great, young New York City hipster vibe, without being too cliché. The song VIDEO STORE RENTAL GUY may appear to be a song with a mundane meaning, which it is. CRYSTAL NECKLACE is one of those songs too. I can picture the members of the band, unshowered from the night before, playing a show on a small stage where the audience is somehow entranced by the slow, steady jams of the band. This threesome, two guys and a girl (whose name mind you is Alicia Silverstone, but not that one), seem to have that artsy, careful attention to synchronization that a lot of these new Brooklyn Hipster bands lack. They may be singing about nothing, but why fake the emotion for anything else? I believe them. According to their myspace, their song with the most plays is PHSYIC MESA, a song that initially can be described as sing-alongable. It is hard not to bob your head to this song. The rising beat of the chorus does not lead to a more intensified vocal range. I like the consistency of the sound of the almost clashing voices. A hint of protest alongside a sense of acceptance. Joy and exhaustion. This is perfect music for young New York.
