There’s nothing like comfort food on a cold, blustery fall day to make you feel right at home, especially when your home is over 3,000 miles across the Atlantic. Homesick Brits living in all five boroughs can rejoice in the chippery goodness of Brooklyn’s Chip Shop, which, thanks to two locations, really has Brooklyn covered. Both locales specialize in British pub fare prepared to the highest of foodie expectations, an extensive selection of British, Irish and Scottish beers and a commitment to British pub culture (complete with full schedule of footy on any given day).
Traditional plates like Steak and Kidney Pie are served next to American hybrids like Deep Fried Pizza by the Chip Shop’s amiable and attentive staff. The comfortable pub setting and friendly faces will draw you in but it is Chip Shop’s delightfully fluffy and slightly sweet beer batter that will keep you coming back. Whether it’s wrapped around chicken fingers or flakey cod, the batter is crunchy at the first bite, non-greasy and spot on delicious.
The Shepherd’s Pie should also not be missed.
Three variations, beef, wild mushroom and vegetarian, are available but the beef really makes mouths water. The dish, which is served with a side of peas, is based by an exquisitely seasoned savory beef stew. The topping of baked cheese adds just enough saltiness to negate the need of any condiments and the peas, when introduced as part of the mix, add the appropriate amount of crispness to stand up to the plentiful mound of buttery yet airy mashed potatoes.
Check out the Atlantic Avenue location during the week from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. when sitting at the bar gets you 20% your entire bill. Or go on Wednesdays for Trivia Night, the winner gets a $100 bar tab. All the entrees hover just above the $10 mark and with portions so large they could easily feed two (or three or 10), Chip Shop could become your home away from home.
Chip Shop: 129 Atlantic Ave, Brooklyn, 718-855-7775 or 383 Fifth Ave, Brooklyn, 718-832-7701
