Starting with the character of forty-something Samantha and her young boyfriend on Sex and The City, the media has helped in recent years to open up a whole new role model: “the cougar,” an older woman who dates or marries a younger guy. There now is an online cougar dating site called Cougared.com. And OnSpeedDating.com has cougar/boy toy speed dating, among many other older women/younger guy speed dating events. And there is also a popular TV show called Cougar Town.
Younger guys are often extremely attracted to cougars, who sometimes known as MILFs, according to the Urban dictionary, a MILF is “a sexy mom, whether married, separated or divorced, that a male individual sees as physically attractive enough to want to have sexual intercourse with them.” MILFs are viewed as being attractive because they are sexually savvy, careful about birth control and can be great teachers for less experienced men.
In this new Demi-Ashton world, many 45+ women have happily broadened their dating choices to include younger guys. But for them it is not just sexual: the rules have changed according to a recent study of 100 self-proclaimed cougars. The dated stereotype of the older man-eating woman, a la Stifler's mom from 'American Pie,' no longer applies. These days it is not about a sugar mama having a boy toy fling. It’s about finding a new form of lasting and fulfilling love, just as Demi has.
Most of these new cougars say they are not simply looking for a casual encounter, but rather a long-term relationship with a younger guy. They filter out the gold diggers and expect the guy to pay his way—to cover dinner or split the check. These women want the full experience of dating someone who is romantic, chivalrous and, best of all, relatively free of the emotional baggage of past relationships. 52% of the cougars in the study were in their 40s and their ideal guy is aged 24-27. 45% were ‘lifestyle cougars’ who have dated more than five younger men. Over-40 women are redefining the rules and roles of cougar dating. They know what they want in love relationships and are opening doors to new possibilities for themselves. And the younger guys are now hunting cougars!

I think this is one of the best analyses of the trend that I have read. You are spot on. Taking the sexuality as only part of the equation, this makes sense to me. May/December relationships are now becoming egalitarian.

If the younger guy and older woman are financially on the same playing field, then maybe there is something to it (ala Kutcher and Moore)...Otherwise, it's all about an older woman parading around her young boytoy...and that is NOT a complimetary statement. Come on...how can a guy keep a woman entertained in the lifestyle that she is used to if SHE is the one making six figures and he is earning a few bucks an hour - or worse, is still a student....I know the trend goes in reverse - woman who date significantly older men are called Golddiggers - and I don't agree with that, either. It's just a shame to watch your best guy friend become pussywhipped by the older sugar momma that he's dating...but Hey! her ass keeps him entertained even if his pride is gone.

Guys like Ashton are total Mama's boys. Taking one high profile Hollywood example and saying it's a trend is complete BS. Ashton and Demi as a couple are a Hollywood brand. Cougars are generally only good for fast sexual hook ups.. Every young guy knows that older women are easy lays and of course testosterone in this case will often overcome common sense and seek its release with something more "experienced".
These guys instinctively know that there is no future with these women. More careful about birth control? Heck I bet most of these women had their tubes tied off a long time ago.
So ladies if this is what you want then please go for it! But truth be told many of you ladies already had your day in the sun a long time ago and squandered it on casual dating and loose relationships.. now as that sun is setting you want to stay in denial and pretend that you are still in High School or College? Please. There is just no dignity in it.

Cougars .. take them for the easy sex ... play with them until you spot a nice 20 something feline and then throw the old wrinkly thing back into the zoo. If a women is 44 and is dating a man that is 27, what do you think is going to happen when you hit 50 and he wants a child of his own? The reverse atleast works because older men don't expect financial equity and we can procreate at that older age.
