Cities in the Air at Robert Henry Vintage

In architecture, certain forms signify certain things. A fountain means a public place for people to gather outdoors. Stout pillars on bank facades indicate stability and longevity -- at least, they did until recently.

In a timely meditation on the value of such symbols, painter Jodi Chamberlain turns the language of form inside out with her fragile cityscapes, now on view at RHV Fine Art, the gallery at Robert Henry Vintage design shop in Brooklyn.

Taking the architectural signs that mean "stability" and "home" (Mansard roofs, colored doors) and placing them at precarious heights against wild, beautiful skies with no terra firma in sight, Chamberlain seems to ask whether stability itself is an illusion.

It's definitely a message worthy of contemplation in these troubled economic times.  And visiting the exhibition is free of charge.

Robert Henry Vintage is located in Brooklyn at 683 6th Avenue in Brooklyn.  They are open Wednesdays through Fridays from 6pm to 9pm, and Saturdays and Sundays 2pm to 9pm.
