A lunchbox is the new must-have accessory

One-of-a-kind Heatherette lunchbox for The Lunchbox Auction
The third annual Lunchbox Auction to raise money for the Food Bank for New York City and The Lunchbox Fund of South Africa kicked off this week with a celebrity fundraiser at the Meatpacking District’s Milk Studios. The auction features a number of lunchboxes that were custom designed by such celebrities, artists and fashion designers as Michael Stipe, Yoko Ono, Mike Myers, Eva Mendes, Gwyneth Paltrow, Mario Batali, the cast of GossipGirl, Diane von Furstenberg, Heatherette and Cynthia Rowley, among others.

While some lunchboxes were auctioned off at the kick-off event, the other lunchboxes are being auctioned off online, where bids can be placed until midnight on December 18th.
About the charities benefited:
  • “The Lunchbox Fund provides impoverished children in the township schools of Soweto often their only meal of the day. Many of these children are AIDS orphans who are caring for their siblings and whose performance at school is diminished without food. Receiving food encourages these children to stay in school and obtain their education.”
  • “There are more than three million New Yorkers who have difficulty affording food — an astounding number and one that continues to increase as the donated food supply drops to an all-time low and energy and fuel costs skyrocket. To address this issue, the Food Bank procures and distributes food to a network of more than 1,000 food assistance programs citywide. In addition, we provide food safety and capacity-building workshops; manage school nutrition education programs, after-school and emergency food programs; conduct food stamp prescreening and outreach; operate a senior food program, soup kitchen and food pantry; coordinate the largest Free Tax Assistance Program in the country; and develop policy and conduct research to inform community and government efforts to end food poverty throughout New York City.”

Happy Bidding!
