Mercury in high fructose corn syrup may cause damage to the brain and kidneys (Part One)

Forget the commercials about high fructose corn syrup not being a concern!

Two recent studies found mercury in high fructose corn syrup and in foods containing high fructose corn syrup.

High fructose corn syrup or HFCS is used in almost all soft drinks and in many processed foods such as salad dressings, ketchup, jams, jellies, ice cream and even bread. HFCS contains a high percentage of fructose, much more than regular corn syrup.

The human body does not utilize fructose well and this can cause a disruptive effect on metabolism. That might be why there is an obesity epidemic , especially in children.

In one of the two studies, a team of researchers found mercury in nine out of twenty samples of HFSC tested. This study was published in January 26, 2009 issue of Environmental Health.

The second study conducted by Dr. David Wallinga and his colleagues at the nonprofit Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy tested 55 different foods bought at a supermarket in 2005. All the labels tested listed HFCS as the first and second ingredient.

Dr. Wallinga’s group found that nearly one out of three of these products had mercury above the detection level. It is believed mercury got into the HCFS during the manufacturing process at plants using mercury-grade caustic soda ( a form of lye used in the chemical industry).

Whoa! This whole scenario really freaks me out! All I can say is that I am really happy that I have been taking a daily supplement of spirulina.

Since mercury can damage the brain and kidneys, I think I will up my daily dosage of spirulina from six tablets to eight!

As for pregnant women, there is a concern about passing the mercury in their bodies to their babies, possibly harming the developing nervous system leading to learning disabilities and developmental disabilities.

I realized the study completed by Dr. Wallinga’s group happened in 2005, but I am concerned that this might have been going on for quite some time. Maybe, that’s why there has been a rise in neurological disorders, such as autism.

But, for now, I am going to stock up on spirulina, since it removes mercury from the human body.
