USA Today reported earlier this week that some Chinese infant formula has been found to be contaminated with melamine. That’s the same compound found in Chinese pet food earlier this year. Melamine, an inexpensive byproduct of plastic manufacturing, can be used to mimic high-protein additives. Food contaminated with melamine killed pets, and is definitely unsafe for humans, especially infants.
The FDA noted that none of the domestic infant formula supply is safe and unaffected, and the FDA says no US formula manufacturers use ingredients from China. Tainted formula produced in China may show up in Asian and ethnic markets. There has been a spike in kidney problems among infants in China resulting from the contamination, and Chinese authorities are investigating.
