New polling in the governor's race out today confirms the conclusions of several polls taken prior to President Obama's highly publicized visit to campaign on Governor Jon Corzine's behalf: the president's popularity has no impact on Corzine's poll numbers. Strategic Vision's most recent poll in the Garden State shows Corzine falling further behand Republican challenger Christopher Christie, despite the presidential endorsement he received last week.
According to the poll, Chrsitie now leads Corzine by 15 points, 53-38, in a three-way race including independent candudate Chris Daggett. The result represents a net increase of three points for Christie since the last poll by the same group in June. Sixty-two percent of New Jerseyans say the state is headed in the wrong direction, and 55% disapprove of the job Corzine is doing as governor. By contrast, Obama receives 50% approval in the poll.
Christie has led Coezine in all but two polls conducted this year. The fifteen point spread matches his largest lead to date and is the seventh survey in the last ten to show him with a double-digit lead. For Corzine, time is fast running out on his chances to turn the race around. If his numbers do not improve soon, he may lose his most valuable asset, President Obama, as the White House will be reluctant to send the first-term president out in support of a doomed gubernatorial candidate.
